neue schule starter bit?

yes used one to start my mare and was very good, she is a wbxtb and a sensitive mare. I have had no problems, only just changed it to a full cheek version but thats it. always opens mouth for bit, happy in it.

Ive justed started using this on my 11 year old wb to help him stretch down and seek the contact. He seems to really like it and it's made a difference. I'm using "the horse bit bank" as you can hire them & if it's not suitable you can sendit back or else buy it :)

did anyone else find this was small made? mine if 5 inch so would i need a 5 1/2 or 5 1/4 would it make a huge difference??

All the NS bits get a big thumbs up from me, started my warmblood off in this and she is still in it and my anglo arab is currently being started in a team up bit. You can ring and speak to Heather Hyde and she will tell you which one is best for your horse as all horse's mouths are different shapes/sizes. The team up bit was more suitable for my aa than the starter due to them having a higher palate. The starter can also be used for the rest of their ridden career if it suits.

I would have a good look at your horse's mouth and give Heather a ring, or you can email and get them to ring. Interestingly, she knew exactly what both of my horses mouths were like without me saying a word. Extremely knowledgeable lady!

Yes, very good bit for baby starters, or sensitive mouths. Just moved my "ruined" mouthed rescue from this to a KK lozenge, and he's now a happy guy after the NS did the trick.

Was just trying to find your last post to let you know of my bit progress...

I have had the NS trans angled lozenge and my horse hated it. Acted like he had cramp in his jaw when I took it off and stretched his tongue endlessly (made me realise how large it is). Before that he was in a loose ring snaffle with lozenge - just a cheap one. He clearly had comfort issues but nothing like as bad as with the NS.

Now I have just tried a Myler low port comfort snaffle and he was the happiest and most relaxed he has been. Went for a really long fast hack and he was great. Still shaking his head, but I don't think anything is going to stop that - it is habit by now. But other than that, which was very sporadic, he could happily take up contact and there was no chomping and stretching and other strange open mouthed contortions.

Really pleased.

Blue whippet - sounds like you have tried allsorts - just to let you know, my mare was always messing with her bit, occasionally pulling and stretching, used to head shake if anyone new got on her, I tried lots of different mild jointed bits as I was told not to put her in a straight bar...then at the age of about 13 I decided to just try it....different horse, never looked back. Just thought I'd share my experience with you.

i called them today and the lady was really helpful....suggested that the team up bit would probably be more suited to him though rather than the starter, im going to try it and see

bluewhippet im glad that bit suited your boy, ill def keep it in mind for if this ns doesnt work! fingers crossed it does though :-)

I wasn't going to try another bit - my instructor said it was just a habit with him - but seeing his strange faces made me take pity on him! It's lovely isn't it? He is a sweet horse. Really gets more and more willing and easy to ride, just sensitive about every aspect of his tack - all has to be the most expensive I can possibly find - girth, bit, numnah, head piece, everything...

Was going to add that sometimes a straight bar or mullen mouth suits difficult horses who can't deal with the pinching / mobility of a broken mouthed bit. Didn't work with my difficult guy, but i have had success with straight bar bits on a lot of sensitive youngsters, usually rubber straight bars.

I have a collection of NS bits going on! My horse has worked his way up through the bits. We went to the hanging cheek tranz but he didn't like so went back to his team up and he settled again with this one and is working very well seeking contact and not fighting it as he did with the tranz.

I've also got the verbindend ones and they work great too for lifting the forehand but my horse does that on his own now in the team up :D

do you think the head throwing thing is an arab thing?

I think so, in that mine does that very Arab thing, where when he is showing off, he swings his head backwards and forwards especially on sharp turns. He does that in the field and on the lunge when he is fresh and it is a real, look at me, head gesture. I am sure other breeds do it, but I associate that with Arabs.

I have heard other people say that their Arabs have very restless heads! Mine definitely does it when he is feeling stressed or excited. I don't mind it as long as I know it's just him - rather than something I am doing to him.

I have ridden riding school horses for most of my life, and mostly the sharp ones, and they all tossed their heads - probably from deep discomfort - so I am quite used to it.

Arabs are incredibly boring and complicated to spend money on! Almost everything I attempt I start researching and find out that they have got an unusual shaped mouth or strange rib cage or a forward girth...
