Hi i got my 11 yr old mare a few months ago as my first horse and she is great most of da time apart from cantering and jumping shes becomes very strong and forward goin which i find very hard to control. she is currently ridden in a snaffle but i was recomnended to try da neue schule 16mm universal bit i just wondered if anyone has ever used this bit in a similar situation and what they thought. also she puts her tongue over da bit is it worth trying a flash as well? i have been having lessons from a good teacher but she is just naturally forward goin! Any advice welcomed. Thanks

Before you start, have the teeth done by an EDT, and examine the mouth conformation, is there a need for a ported bit or a thin bit [16mm], also check for inflamed gums, any unusual feature.
You might be able to borrow a cherry roller snaffle, [same idea as a waterford] which prevents them grabbing the bit, there are so many combinations, it is best to do a lot of schooling in a small arena and develop the flatwork before you do too much jumping. You are not used to a keen type, and may not be relaxed, not concentrating on riding the horse through your seat, and perhaps you feel as though you have to keep a tight hold of the reins, which is fine for some horses, but if she was not like this at the beginning it may be that you are stiffening up, and this will make things worse!
Keep working the horse, hack out too, and feed a plain diet, nothiing sugary, soak any haylage and don't stuff her full of grub, as we all tend to do this when we get a new horse.
Thus armed, you can ring Neu Schule for their advice, as they will ask you all the right questions and will select the right bit.
