Hi

I am looking at switching my boys schooling bit to a loose ring NS Verbinbend, he has a very thick tongue and it’s meant to really suit horses with his mouth type, also, it’s dressage legal

I’m a bit unsure what size to order, he is in a 5.75 D ring at the moment and it fits him nicely but a lot of reviews say to go up a size, but some say they are true to size.

He is in a loose ring NS Waterford for hacking which is 6 inches and again fits perfectly (was told to go up a size)

If anyone is using this bit and can give any feedback on how they’ve found it that would be great too 😊

Thanks in advance for any advice

I would stick with the NS sizing of the bit you already have and try a 6.0". If you aren't convinced get one from a bit bank to try.

I haven't used the Verbindend but certainly the Tranz and the Universal were the same size as each other. I used them on a horse with a very fat tongue, I like them because of the option for a thinner mouthpiece.

The verbindend is quite a curved mouthpiece and in a loose ring you obviously need to allow a little extra so the lips don’t touch the holes. My horse is always a 5.5, but I got a loose ring verbindend on trial in a 5.75 and it was too small. 6 inch was just about big enough, but he didn’t like it even though it sounded perfect on paper. They are fairly expensive bits so I would get one on trial.

Thank you both, agree it sounds perfect on paper and reviews seem generally positive...I will definitely trial one, the other bit I was considering was the Sprenger KK Ultra, sadly even more expensive 😳

Is there a particular issue? I’m rather a bit nerd having tried quite a few with my fussy youngster 🤦‍♀️

Defintely agree with the need to go up in sizing. I ride both of mine in verbindends one is usually 5" but 5.25" and the other usually 5.5" and in a 5.75". Fabulous bits which both are far happier in than any other bit to date, tried others since and have come back full circle.

He does tend to lean on the bit schooling, I changed his hacking bit to a loose ring Waterford and the difference has been amazing he goes so much better but as it isn’t dressage legal was looking around for something to do the same job, on paper the verbinbend is perfect as it is smaller and apparently shaped to be really comfortable for horses with big tongues and thick lips.. (maxi cob)

By all means try the Verbindend, I know a lot of horses like it. As with your boy, mine can lean and go onto the forehand when schooling and the best bit I have found to help this other than a Waterford is a Bombers Buster Roller. It is dressage legal too.

Thank you 😊 I’ve ordered the verbindend for a trial so if it doesn’t suit him I can send it back and will try the bombers. Good to have a plan B
