Just a quick question really.....

was speaking to someone at neue schule about autumn and her jumping, she does take hold sometimes and get very heavy in the hand, particularly in 'off the back' canters etc and does sometimes 'lock on' and set herself coming into a fence - were starting xc schooling soon and i think for reasons of safety and the fact it will be more comfortable for the pair of us i think the bitting will need to go up a gear from her normal everyday snaffle. The people at neue schule agreed and they suggested a fulmer waterford.

jus looking for other peoples thoughts on this? going to try and somewhere in the back of my mind tells me i need to order a size bigger than normal for a waterford, am i correct in thinking this? (shes currently in a 5.5 inch jp cyprium snaffle, cavesson noseband)

thankies! x

Sounds like good advice to me! You can get waterford fulmers in the cyprium metal for about 20quid from townfields...ive personally only ever used the horses normal size in a full cheek waterford, otherwise you just negate the purpose of the full cheek. The bonus with the ns waterfords is the mouthpiece is thinner,so easily accepted and you can order in quarter inches so you can have it a fraction bigger without loosing the direction from the full cheek.

I bought a NS waterford Universal at Badminton. I questioned them about the sizing, they said to have normal size, I said I was sure I had to go up, they said no, I bought 5.5inch, got it home, too small, have emailed them to exchange and they haven't replied, NOT happy!

As a rule of thumb, if a waterford is loose ring (like Weezy's Universal!) then you need the next size up as otherwise it will rub your horse.

In a fixed cheek like a pelham or full cheek, you can get away with your normal size if your normal size leaves at least one pinky (little finger) width either side of the bit. However the waterford bends and makes it shorter, so if tight, go for the bigger size.

Also Weezy why didn't you ask me for a cheap Waterford universal???:o

I have a question about Waterford Pelhams: The Neue Schule pelham I have has very short cheeks and looks quite odd on my show cob - does anyone know if there is a company that can (CotswoldSJ?) make me one with longer cheeks?
I emailed the Cotswold Sport website and they didn't really answer the question....I could do with the cheeks being at least an inch - 2" longer.
Before everyone jumps on me - it's a bit I use only occasionally when my cob needs it, usually he goes in a double but sometimes he needs the Waterford.
Thank you

Email wise if you got dad he'd probably say no! :D
Our cheeks are 14.5cm in total length

The only company that makes to order is abbey, but will be probably over £80 and they didn't really do a copper mix alloy, so may have to be Stainless steel too.

Thanks for the reply! TBH I have used it only twice "in anger" so I'll cope with it looking titchy in his mouth - it does the job which is the most important thing!
Thanks again :)

With the neue schule waterfords the link nearest the ring (or cheek) is a little longer so there isn't a joint in the corners of the mouth to pinch, therefore it is best not to go bigger than you have to.

I LOVE NEUE SCHULE BITS!!!! i dont have any experience with the waterford but ive used a few of the others and my mare LOVES them!!! but yes the sizes are a little small!! but i HIGHLY recomend them!
