Hello,

Currently working my boy in a Wilkie snaffle (loop ring snaffle) with a losenge in the middle - it's borrowed from my YO and it's a Neue schule bit. I'm looking him to get him one of these and a loose ring snaffle with a losenege in the middle as well but Neue schule bits are expensive!! Are they really that much better when I'm buying snaffles and if so why?

Pony is 5, broken this year and has started schooling seriously in the last couple of months - he has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 3 weeks (maybe the jockey is finally getting the idea!) and I don't want to disturb anything, but on the other hand I also don't really want to spend £100 on 2 bits!!

Any ideas for NS alternatives?

Cheers :)

I really think they are worth it. Having seen the difference in my horse from a regular french link and the NS equivalent, I would advise NS every time.

Think they are worth it too. ALthough a bit is only small, they have an enormous effect on the horses way of going (unless that is just my sensitive soul mare!). The shape of them, angle of the lozenge and warm metal all help to make them comfortable for the horse so they go in a softer way and gently mouth the bit. Our two mares love them. (One is in a loose ring verbind, the other in a hanging cheek)
They are pretty expensive, so why not just get the loose ring - does for everything and is dressage legal too?

I've just tried one on loan from a bit bank and I think its really good - the bit and the bit bank! Funnily enough I've just parcelled mine up to send back, not because I don't think it's good, but it's just a tiny bit small so sending it back with a request to replace it for a slightly bigger one.

I've been using the NS Team Up based on what others on here have said about it, like you didn't want to go to the expense of buying one that didn't do anything, but was happy to risk a tenner or so in 'hire' and postage. Here's the 'bank' I used.

Excellent service - it came next day recorded delivery and would only have cost £5 to hire for the month (plus P&P) if I didn't want to keep it.

I think they are worth it too, I have the verbindend (sp?!) and my horse goes better in this than any other brand I have tried.

Are there any second hand ones on eBay?

I swear by them too. After having tried many, many bits over the years my boy is going fantastically well in a neue schule team up bit. Heather from neue schule gave fantastic advice too. Well worth the money and cheaper than some other bits too!

I think they are most definitely worth the extra expense - more of an investment really. Buying an NS bit made the most amazing difference to her way of going, it made her really.

I have a number of their bits for different disciplines and all mine go in NS bits, I would never use anything else now.

When u think about it, you would invest in a decent saddle or bridle, but the bit is just as, if not a more important piece of tack so I think definitely worth spending a bit extra on.

My mare is an awkward so & so but accepts the NS no problems at all, the Tranz Pony versions come with slimmer mouth pieces although they go up to a 5" or 5.5", so are brilliant for horses with smaller mouths like my mare. The lozenge allows the sides of the bit to be used more independently from each other so more effective and less confusing for your horse.

You can buy alternatives, for example my friend has a loose ring, lozenge snaffle made by Cottage Craft, I think this has a copper mouthpiece though and not Salox. I tried this bit on my mare out of curiosity and she could definitely tell the difference. I know all about it if I try and use anything other than an NS on her! Fussy bugger!
