Neurectomy- abax seasamoidian

Hoping all of you can give your good and bad opinions on De-nerving. The horse has had 3 MRIs over 30 xrays and several blocking sessions. 10 months off and some weeks at a rehab yard with an ArcEquine and Vitafloor. His tests found nothing untoward in the area he blocks out in (abaxial seasamoidian) he is being remedially shod too. The last thing to try is Denerving the outside of his fetlock or pts. He would not be able to retire due to being intermittently lame in the field, my livery yard not allowing 24/7 turnout and his suffering very badly from ulcers when moved due to stress. He's only 12 and a lovely TB gelding.... What would you do?
 
Personally I know what I would do . Denerving cannot take away the reason for the pain just mask it!
Also seen some pretty nasty consequences of it in the past.
What would be your intention as to use if you have the OP ? I would never knowingly ride a horse that has had a neurectomy.
 
I'd put him to sleep for the same reasons as Popsdosh. I'm sorry you are in this situation.

Yes the vets opinion is that if he is going to be put to sleep as the other to the operation then if it doesn't work you've not lost anything. His owner thinks I should go for it (on permanent loan to me she bred him)

I was very much against the idea until my vet told me he was confident he could leave the whole inside of his leg with feeling as the idea of having the whole lower limb numb is not something I'd ever consider.

To keep him in a good sustainable condition to be able to cope with an easy life in my opinion he would still need to be able to do some bits of flatwork in the school. I've seen many problems when people have older horses who just have and don't ask much of them just lose all muscle and encounter other back issues etc from weakness.

What is the Vet charging for this operation ? I seriously question their ethics! He certainly wont be losing anything if it does not work but you will.
If I had bred him I would want him PTS , the horse has a problem which cant be cured . His quality of life needs taking into account as well.

Not much. Getting official quote on Monday but much less than £800 is all he said. I don't think if be losing much if all that happens was he didn't come sound? He would end up pts either way and id be sure he had a few weeks pain free before being put down just on bute or inflacam. He said he should return to unaffiliated dr and sj. Although all I mainly do these days is hack and the odd schooling session a week. The vet at Langford said the only real option it could be is nerve damage from a old injury tk the fetlock.
 
A horse I sold had a double neurectomy in the front feet due to high & low ring bone one leg worse than the other
The original problem was that he slightly loaded right fore foot so did not place the foot flat. Poor horse had months of box rest where he was colicing and ultimately was put to sleep about 2 years later only just aged 10. The heartbreak I feel over it all . The vet concerned was also of the opinion it would cure the problem ??? How ???
