Has anyone gone down this route with their navicular horses?

Debating it myself at the moment and would appreciate views etc, no offence will be taken!!!!

Thanks

I'm sorry but I think it is indefensible. It removes the pain, not the cause. The cause is usually tendon/ ligament breakdown and I therefore consider denerving so that the pain cannot be felt is completely unacceptable.

Have you looked at barefoot rehab? Rockleyfarm.blogspot.com

I agree. No feeling but the damage and cause is still there, where can that possibly lead? Pain is often a protective symptom and our guide to when to stop.

It's something I would never consider - as stated above, it removes the pain, but not the cause - therefore the horse could do more damage to itself as it can't feel the pain. I have a navicular disease horse and I remember this being one of the options I was offered. As it was, I had just started reading and taking an interest in barefoot after reading loads about it on this forum so I had the shoes taken off and got a good barefoot trimmer on board. My horse is now pretty good, hacks out, schools and does a bit of low level dressage.

I think it is on rockey ground ethically and there are too many reports of nerve regrowth for me to even consider it.

I am in my fifties and I worked with SJers who where denerved for navicular it used to be done a fair bit .
It's not something I would ever consider .
I think it's unethical .

I once remember a horse at hickstead who literal tore its foot off on camera and was totally oblivious to it. That is why now any form of denerving is banned in all disciplines.

Not something I would consider as I feel it is done for the best of the human and not for the best of the animal.

If you are at the end of the road of traditional treatment then please do consider barefoot rehab over a neurectomy - the story of my horse is on my blog below and we are back eventing less than two years post diagnosis.
