If a vet was discussing this for treatment for hind leg suspensory ligament injury would it be as a last resort or that the injury was a real bad one?
Also what are people thought on these?Personally don't like the thought that horse can't feel if its doing any further damage but would judge each case individually.
Also was told that nerve can regrow -as little as 6 months(rare) and up to 2 yrs???
Thanks

From experience of a horse that I worked with, a neurectomy is pretty much a last resort to a situation that cannot be otherwise rectified. I wasnt aware that a suspensory injury could be dealt with in this way though, I thought it was navicular/collateral ligament/impar ligament problems, and others within the hoof capsule that this op was used on.
In the horse that I had dealings with, the 1st neurectomy wasnt high enough and he remained lame, a second op cut all the nerves from mid cannon down, but was still ineffective. The vet seemed to think there was a minute nerve that couldnt be found that was still intact and therefore the horse still had feeling, and was still lame.
The outcome for this boy is that he has been retired to grass. I believe that a percentage of all neurectomies fail, and that another small percentage have the nerves re-heal.
Sorry, not a good tale! x
