Neurological Issues - any experience?

My mare is off the RVC to see a neurologist this week. About 2 weeks ago she started in left canter to do some weird leg action with her right hind. She almost leaves it behind then snatches it up. It kinda looks like stringhalt but she's not kicking it forward towards her stomache at all, just over doing the picking it up. It's only in left canter & she has had a full lameness work up & was proclaimed sound, hence our trip to Potters Bar! This all started suddenly and we can't tie it in with anything, she was actually on a week off with a tooth root infection, she had no kick marks or any signs of anything bothering her, she's willing to work and even canter on the left rein, she is not fussed at all?!

She was put on Nupafeed to see if it was tension related but that has had no effect.

Anyone had a neurological work-up? Anyone experienced anything like this?

Totally baffled???

OMG- i am having nearly the exactly the same thing at the moment- tho i have spent nearly 4k on diagnostics with the lameness work up. they now think mine in neurological but he turns both directions really tightly with no issues and its trot mine has the issue with. he's devloped an abnormal gait with his hind legs. he's had 6 months off and exactly the same. mine is sound when not ridden- is yours??

i really want a refferal to RVC but i only have about £1000 left- would that be enough- have you been told what the refferal would entail- really really interested to know!
 
im sure if you gave them the full history and explained whats already been done and how much money is available the vets would advise you after all they are used to complicated cases and know people dont have an endless supply of money.

ye i think your right. i'm going to ask for a refferal- have all the history sent to them, tell them what insurance money they have and ask them to do their best. at the end of the day i might as well use what is available to me
 
She still does the weird leg action in left canter when I am not on board as well as when I am on board. It's just so weird that it is only effected in left canter, sound in every other respect (small circles, circles on hard, after flexion etc etc). I'm really trying to tie the start to something...she was having 2 daily shots of antibiotics for tooth root infection & a bute...I'm wondering if it could be linked to this? Or whether the tooth root infection is linked to something else as the swelling came out the side of her jaw which is not normal for the tooth that was infected & she has massively swollen glands from mouth to ears for at least a month - bloods came back clear however? It's all come in one go which may just be bad luck but I am wondering if there is something more to it. I can let you know what they do, if they find anything & what my bill is like if you like?

Is your boy happy & seem normal to you? My mare seems totally unaffected by it all, she feels no different & is quite happy to canter on the left, if my instructor hadn't noticed it I wouldn't have known as the canter doesn't feel different from normal.

i believe that sometimes neuro issues can be caused by a virus, so maybe your girls root infection is also a result of a virus?
my boy looks the best he ever has! thats why i'm convinced he's not in pain. he's so happy to be ridden but as soon as you ask for trot it all goes wrong, but he still goes. its like its normal to him! have you been given any idea of a prognisis?? its been suggested to me he'll need to be retired or pts. but i just want to know what is wrong. did you get your refferal quickly or have they a long waiting list?
 
We spotted it on the 3rd March, she'd had the previous 10 days off due to the root infection. On the 8th March Vet did lameness work up, put her on Nupafeed as he believed immediately that it was neurological. Checked her again 15th March no change & vet baffled, never ever seen anything like it & he has years & years of experience & is a lameness specialist - my first thought after this - oh *****! Referred to RVC same day got an appointment this Wed. So it's only been about 2.5 weeks since it all kicked off. Not given any idea of prognosis, he did say to my instructor that I should be able to carry on with everything & might have to put up with some dressage judges pulling me up...although he did say they if they know their stuff shouldn't because she is not lame & that is quite obvious, however I fully expect to be pulled up, I would if I were a judge it's such a freaky movement:-) I'm still feeling positive that it is resolvable, might not be so positive after Wed but at least I will know what on earth is going on!
