I've got a couple of dogs that are entire because they were show dogs however due to difficulties in last couple of years they haven't been shown. They are driving me round the twist with their constant pining for bitches is season and more and wondered what is the view on getting them neutered at the age they are.
1 is age 8yrs and the other is 9yrs.
I also havr a bitch that needs to be spayed and she is now 6yrs old.

I would get them done, it is a fairly straight forward operation for males. If you are concerned ask your vet to run pre op blood tests before the surgery, this would show up if there were any issues the vet should be aware of. I would also get the bitch done, I have had more than one done at 6 years and older, again do pre op bloods to put your mind at rest, but the older your bitch gets the more she is at risk of pyometra so it is better to be safe than sorry in my view.

Just had our 5yr old lab bitch spayed laproscopically, because she was an older dog. She was over it in 24 hrs; right as rain as soon as the anaesthetic was out of her system.

I recently had my 6 year old ex stud dog neutered and he's been absolutely fine. It hasn't changed his personality as such but has just taken the edge off him. I have an entire bitch too so it was necessary to get him done. She has just had a season and he was still interested but nowhere near as hyped and stressed as when he was entire and had to be kept away from her. I'm glad that I made the decision to neuter him and I think overall he is calmer and probably happier now that his hormones aren't permanently ruling his head!
