I was just looking at the lovely puppy from the Mayhew Home and was surprised to see that the home on their website says they have neutured him and he is only 3 months old.

When I enquired of my vets they said the earliest they would do unless unlying medical or behavioural problems would be 9 months ... so I was just wondering what ages other people had their dogs neutured?

I am quite happy to wait the 9 months but was just surprised in such a difference in age when my vet was quite adamant on the age limit ..
 
My male Dobe was neutered at 18 months(big dog) and I wanted him to have matured before neutering.

A lot of rescues are neutering earlier before they go to new homes to ensure that it is done and not reliant on the new owner thus ensuring they dont breed.

Given a choice any breed of dog should be given time and allowed to mature imo.
 
Got Dylan done at 15months wanted three months more as large breed but he was like a live wire all the time and very in control of the house hold, he's lovely now. Very hyper but does eventually calm down, doesn't bolsh others around as much.
 
I have spayed and castrated puppies between 2 and 3 months old, but not in this country - at the charity I worked at, you neutered every puppy/dog before it could be rehomed, we put to sleep litters of puppies every day, it was far better to neuter early than rehome a dog that was going to contribute to the next round of unwanted puppies.

Over here, I would be happy to neuter from 6 months plus, depending on the size of the dog. My own dog (small breed) was castrated at 6 months; I recommend to owners of small breeds to aim for 6months ish, medium breeds 9 months plus and large breeds over a year - I like them to be nearly fully grown. In bitches where I think they might be on the verge of coming into season I tend to ask owners to wait and book neutering for 3 months after the season. For me, I would prefer to neuter early and reduce the risk of mammary cancer than see cases like one I had last week - a 3 year old bitch put to sleep because her mammary tumours had spread throughout her body. I can also understand why rescues choose to neuter puppies before rehoming, unfortunately it is the only way to ensure that they don't end up producing more puppies to end up back in rescues.
 
I do not agree with it per se and especially in large breeds but if people could be trusted not to have a 'wee litter' of rescue dogs then it would not have to happen in the first place.
 
Think it was reading my thread that prompted this one. Obviously I had no choice the matter but now im slightly concerned as to how this could affect my boys growth etc. I understand why the rescue nuteured him but would love to no the reasons against doing it so young and what the negatives are? Sorry if im slightly dim just not something ive looked into. Given the choice id have had him castrated about 9 months though not sure why its just what i thought was the norm. Thanks x
 
Isn't early neutering more common in the US?

I'm surprised its done that early here as most rescues for pups say around 6 months and want evidence from your vet as proof if not done inhouse, so would thought that was working. I guess this rescue must feel its not, which is a shame.
Mine were all done before i adopted them, Hattie i think about 3 and boys 21 months as they were retired from racing.
 
I didnt mean to alarm you, the fact that vets are performing this when they are young must surely mean they think its for the betterment of the dogs. Dont forget they have been doing this for years in the US and are still doing it, if it caused problems down the line Im sure it would be all over the internet.
