My freind and i went to pick my new horse up this afternoon - What a nightmare!!! Took us half hour to load not too bad - but we are quite experienced loaders. Horse kept rearing and running backwards and had a bit of a panic went we shut the front up but traveled beautifully the 3 miles home (had a big snake of traffic behind as i didnt go above 22 miles per hour!!!!) The nightmare began when we stopped at the yard - she went crazy rearing in the trailer i banged my head on the jockey door in my haste to get out as i thought she was going to have the trailer over! I have never been so b***dy scared in my life - luckily head groom was on hand with her amazing expertise ( i love her!!!) She has wrecked the aprtition on my newly repaired trailer and trashed a brand new set of travel boots and has a cut on her neck although she has got off lightly considering!!!! as she ran back down the ramp and reare again (we didnt dare take her out the front!) I was nearly crying thinking OMG what have i done. So i am very very down, scared, feeling stupid, and p**sed off!!! I had taken my camera to take some lovely laoading shots and shots of her in her new stable to post on here saying how relieved i was and happy my new horse had arrived! - what a joke!

Oh hon what a bad start for you both. Don't worry though once she settles you can start to work with her and get round her problems. When I bought my horse I spent the first 3 months regretting buying her but now 9 months on I am over the moon with her and she is a different horse. Give your new one some time in the field to get use to her new envirnment then just spend lost of time getting to know her. Good luck and don't forget we are all here for advise if you need it.

What a terrible time:(

So so sorry for your bad day, I just hope things settle in and go well from here in out.

I know you must be down after having high hopes about your first day together. Just relax tonight and start fresh tomorrow. just be thankful the horse was not badly injured . Tomorrow you can take those pictures once she has settled and show us what a beautiful horse you have!

oh thank you - i have just had a little weep at your kind words - this will be my 3rd attempt at finding the right horse - i have just spoken to my friend who is an AI and she has agreed to start her off for me - i feel absolutly drained - but like you say tomorrow is another day - i am goingup later when everyone has left ( we have a very busy yard) and will give her a groom and try to start the bonding process.

Dont worry too much about this bad start. Its in the past now. Ive had the odd horrendous loader / traveller - one pony I bought once was off the side of a hill and barely knew how to be led! Took 3 hours to get it into the trailer..... and another freaked out in the trailer for about 3 months at least - he reared over the breast bar several times...... however they've all turned out lovely horses

So there is hope!

Thats such a shame particularly when you were looking forward to it so much. Im sure she will calm down, and at least if you have your own trailer you can go right back to basics with the loading and take as long as you need to get her to trust you. Good luck with her, I hope she settles into her new home quickly.

Oh you poor thing, I really feel for you.
I am sure that is probably the worst day you'll have with her, keep your chin up and things can only get better.
Look forward to seeing piccies of her.
Have fun tonight when you go and see her getting to know her, i bet she will have settled loads.
Good luck for the future.

Your poor love. Lovely of your AI friend to agree to start her for you. Its the best thing you can do , don't struggle alone.
I recently bought a youngster and I am sending him off to be sorted out. It takes a brave person to hand their horse over to someone else and admit they need help..... Me thinks there are more of us about, than we know of !!
Well done Hon !
Everything is going to be just fine.

Just got back and am really sorry to hear this. But you've got her home now so have time to let her settle and to work on the loading. You've got some experienced help around you so you should be able to get it sorted if you decide you want to keep her.
Did her old owner say anything about her travelling? sounds like she won't have done any for a while so be patient.
Have a relaxing evening and a good nights sleep and tomorrow will be another day.
My boy hasn't been that bad since I had him (or at least has never reared with me) but he did trash his old owner's box and tried it on refusing to load with me when I first got him. I still need to load him in a chiffney and unload him backwards but he travels really well now (or did before the last trip to the vets!) so it can be worked on and there is hope.

Sorry to hear that, sounds really frightening. Agree with the great advice already given, put it behind you, tomorrow is a new day. My advice would be to take things really slowly with her, I would just leave her to settle in the field for a few days, just spend time fussing and grooming her, you'll soon form a good bond I am sure. Good luck, looking forward to seeing those pics

thanks to everyone for your words of enouragment. Have just been up the yard and she is very calm mucked out and brushed her in the stable and she was really sweet - so i feel a little more upbeat now - will keep you posted - thanks again x

DONT WORRY!!! my youngster climbed on top of my tack lockers in my lorry when i picked him up and it was scary! found myself climbing under him to pull him off by his front leg. bloody stupid when i think about it!
anyway he is now fine and just scrapes a bit if we get stuck in traffic os have to get diesel and that was just after a few practice trips.
good luck

Oh dear. How upsetting

When I was on the way to pick up my last horse, we hired a lorry. The bloke we hired it from saw me with the package full of cash and said to me "Don't hand that over until you've got it in the box"

Wise words!!

Out of interest, was the horse sold as 100% in all respects?

the lady who is selling her is a complete novice so hasnt done anything with her - she is fab with tractors and combines - have seen for myself - and very quiet to handle also seen for myself - lady and her freind bought her home in trailer and all was ok - but that was 14 months ago - she is quite chilled today and is happily grazing in a pen. My freind has said to put yesterday behind me and forget about it - we think it was just a complete temper tantrum as she has been treated as a pet for the last 14 months. I havent paid for her yet as she is with me for a month before i make my mind up.
