That is why we don't go to do pure SJ very often (plus the fact that we haven't got a clean SJer). I don't understand why showjumping can't be a bit like dressage, especially at affiliated level where you enter in advance and then ring/ check website for times. Organisers know how long (roughly) a round will take and so can work it out from there. You can't enter BD or BE on the day and if people use the excuse "well I'm not organised enough," it would only take a little time to BECOME organised enough to enter in advance.

Sadly, although i would love to go to Addington some time as the facilities sound amazing, I am rapidly being put off

I did some SJ at BCA (a few years ago) where the organiser did give times and it worked fantastically. You knew when to turn up and it was 2-phase. You'd think with such a high volume of entries it would make more sense really. Maybe I'm missing something because I don't SJ often?

I have seriously re-evaluated what i want from a venue. TBH all I really want is a reasonable surface, track and lighting to jump without having to die of boredom before hand. Not bothered about catering as have horsebox. Posh viewing not necessary if not hanging around for hours.
Oh, forgot, reasonable warm up area is slightly important but not critical.
 
Absolutely agree ! For me it is a well-lit, reasonably sized and surfaced indoor arena, and then a good warm-up. Nothing more, nothing less ! We are soo lucky round our way as i have 4 indoor venues that meet that spec perfectly and one of them runs every sunday, while one of the others is always running a saturday or sunday too

They say they run to BD rules yet allow pretty much any bit, dont allow you to work around outside or inside areana prior to commencing test and dont bother having a board to diaplay the scores.
Also noticed the BSJA comp they are going to run will be an intro show so only up to 1mtr and probably no opens.

Think I'll take up aff dressage.

Second thoughts one dressage diva in the family is enough.
 
I did comment on the fact the scores weren't displayed and they then put up a board for the Novice class, so at least they listened!
as for not going into the arenas, i agree it was a bit harsh as you couldn't work around them either.
As the showjumping is not directly being run by the college i am hoping it will be an improvement, and who knows if things are successful they may do bigger classes in future dates?
We will just have to kepp our fingers crossed!!

I can't beleive you think the organisers are being greedy. What do you think they do the shows for, just out of the kindness of their hearts for the riders.

I can tell you that it costs a lot of money to run a show centre, rates, insurance, bsja fees, course builders, judges, arena party, rosettes, prize money, keeping the facilities up to date, so of course the organisers want to make as much money as they can.

But look at it from the other side of the fence for a moment....

They aren't providing a means of contacting them on show days, and they have classes running later in the day (1.20m and 1.25m) that apparently were cancelled because they ran out of time to hold them. How is that fair on the competitors who may have travelled several hours to get there, only to find their classes cancelled

I know it's not easy, and i know there isn't a huge amount of profit in it for show centres a lot of the time, but surely they must be able to work out how long it takes to run their schedules based on an expected number of entries. From what i understand it isn't a rarity at Addington to get big entries, so they can't use the excuse of not expecting the numbers

Pyecombe for one limit their class sizes, and i think it is a good thing personally...despite coming off the wrong side of that legislation myself in the past.
 
I would have just gone home! over 130 in a class is absolutely crazy, and not good for your horse to be standing around in the cold. If you are going to have numbers like that you need to be so organised to keeep it ticking over or allow people to ring to find out rough numbers and start times.
 
As posted earlier - they could do entries in advance, everybody gets a time, nobody has to wait for 6 hours to jump AND they could still accept as many entries as they wanted - wouldn't that be best for all involved?
 
Well I do think that you should be able to ring. I show secretary at ours sometimes, and will accept calls all day long. In fact quite a lot of the competitors have got my mobile number now and will call me directly to prevent the whole hanging around for hours on end.

I was judging at ours yesterday, and we had a "busy" (not by Addington standards) day, with the biggest class being the Discovery with 50 in it. All the other classes had about 35 in them. We were running table A7 all day, so took blooming ages to get through. We did manage to run all 6 classes, and finished at about 8pm, so I can only imagine what it was like at Addington.

They definitely need to have a phone facility on the day, so that competitors can ring and find out how it's going.
 
I think realisitcally what they need to do is be honest about how many horses can jump in the time they want to hold the comp - so then if its 200 horses for example, they divide that by the classes they have so that classes will not be cancelled. 130 in a class and then not holding the next ones is crazyness, why not have 50 in each??

The bigger the classes get, the fewer entries there often are. I was at a show the toher week that cancelled the last two classes.....not due to lack of time, but lack of interest ! They were only a 1.15m and a 1.20m too

I think in part at least, the problems that Addington are experiencing are a result of the BSJA openning up it's membership to the lower levels. It's almost as though the organisation is too bottom heavy now

OK, well then max of 70 in the lower levels and a lower max in the higher classes. If the higher levels are cancelled, people may be missing out on valuable experience, which is what I thought the winter circuits were for!

I turned up, entered, then withdrew and got my money back - could you not have got yours back? I'm never going back on a weekend either... They do close the entries for the BN.... 15 mins after start of class. Patchetts are very very good about letting you phone, on mondays they start with NC, go up to 1m30, then do the BN and Disco. If you ring at about 3 they often tell you to call them back in an hour or something because they want to give you a better idea.

Wow, thats crazy. 138 in an indoor BSJA class? I dont think Ive ever seen that many up here, even at the busier outdoor summer shows. Right now, we have usually up to 25 in a class. Sometimes way way less (depending on the weather!). But then they withold a lot of the prize money.......
