No matter how good a rider you may be or think you may be, never ever take your hat off until your feet are firmly planted back on the ground...

Thankfully Denis Lynch seems to be ok...

And another big name took a tumble this week, Tim Stockdale came out of the side door after jumping a lovely well balanced and controlled six bar, thankfully he was up on his feet in a jiffy :)

What are the rules over falling off? Tim seemed to part company before horse had finished jump but I might be wrong.

if you watch closely you will see a finish board a few feet past the final fence.
TS hit the deck past this board so had completed. Where he parted from the horse is not the decider, where he hits the deck is. :o

He landed just (literally) after the line so it was not counted as a fall. Think he got the biggest cheers of the day when he first gave a thumbs up to say he was ok, then when it was announced he's crossed the line so had won the class!

Yup he hit the deck after the finish. I had a friend who departed on the last fence in an important qualifier she did the ankle on the withers with hands wrapped round the neck routine until she passed the finish gate before letting go (obviously no way back from where she was but she was not going to let herself get eliminated!).

Good reminder about the hats I am in the awful habit of unhooking my hat during the walk off, my OH goes mad but it is so automatic you just forget.

That first fall looked very nasty, hope Denis is not feeling too sore.

Tim did the same thing on his lap of honor too (took his hat off, not fell obviously)

it's a shame the video's been taken down - I'd be interested to see Lynch's fall...I can't find another link either :(

Other thing to say wearing a hat that is not adjusted correctly is useless as well. Knew of a lady who was wearing a hat but as it was loose it was pushed back and she scalped herself and ended up in intensive care.

And Tim Stockdale took his hat off for the victory parade, despite it all!
Weirdly, I now find it quite shocking to see a rider hatless, despite the fact I rode through all of my youth without one (no health and safety in the bad old 70s).
