that grey / black patch that a lot of the horses were wearing under their flash nosebands at Badminton? Saw it when watching on telly and thought it was a pollen guard but on closer inspection via all the wonderful picutres of Badders in the Picture Gallery it doesnt look like it is.

Can anyone shed any light on what it is...? thanks

It's basically a plaster to hold their nostrils open further

Its a nostril strip to help keep the airways open during strenuous exercise, and enables the horse to take in as much oxygen as possible.

in the old days there was a practise of slitting the nostrils attempting to do the same thing (think it still goes on in some cultures)

Sounds daft , but do you have to pull it off after use like a plaster ? If so , ouch !


PS - I've never dared ask a rider who uses them that question

I was also wondering what it was. I guessed it was something to do with helping keep the nostrils open more kinda like one of those nose strips that some people put on at night. If you know what I mean?
