i brought in my sons. horse this morning to ride and saw a trickle of blood down his hind leg and found his chesnut was hanging off and theres a huge hole wheres its come out!!!!!!..i have never seen this happen before.
i washed it and put some antisptic on it, but its very sore. god love him
dont know how it happened.
the problen now is its hanging off on a stringy bit, and i am worried whats left will get caught on something and make it worse...
will it grow back now?

My horse sliced one off when he had a bad fall. It grew back fine, you'd never know he'd done it. I can't be sure which leg it was now.

One of ours did that and it looked gross. I half expected his leg to fall off! But it healed fast and well. We snipped off the hanging bit and sprayed with antiseptic, and yes, it grows back as a chestnut.

Yes! I panicked too! Called vet, "never seen that before" in over 40 adult yrs.....
Nasty deep dark red hole with a little blood. Horse unconcerned. It grew back like my blackened big toenail did!

Ah, don't worry about it, it will be fine - my cob has done this TWICE - the first time it did bleed quite a bit, so i panicked and called out my vet. He just said to keep it clean and not to worry.

Mine did this a few years back, it got a little infected but we managed it on our own and he recovered fine. Looks painful though!

I keep my horse's chestnuts well trimmed, best done when wet, just pull off the layers and then a bit of sandpaper to smooth down before a show.
