is anyone stuggling to find what they are looking iv been to see a few but nothing has been as discribed. people timewaste by not being honest why. Even yesterday i rang a horse which said a allrounder done showing xc dressage etc 4950 but was bought start of year and had done nothing since then and had never done anything other than showing and hacking. would you buy private or a dealer. All i want is a safe genuine allrounder to show and do abit of everything i think i have a reasonable budget for a 15.2 to 16h of 4500. Am i asking too much

I don't think you are asking for too much but you will have to spend a lot of time looking and being very careful. Its an absolute minefield out there. Whereabouts are you? maybe some HHO's will be able to make some suggestions.

Im up in cumbria willing to travel though there are so many dodge people out there. Dont get me wrong there are also genuine people to but its finding them.

im looking too and finding it a nightmare. have rung up about loads and viewed 3. 2 of those were totally unlike described wouldnt let daughter get on one.

I have been looking all year - found what I thought was the "right" one, but found out the hard way early on that he was not as described and I finally managed to return him to the dealer!

So, still looking ......

i am having the same problem, selling and finding a new one

i think the right one will be out there, if you spend a while looking it makes it even more special when you find them

you dont sound like you are asking too much for your money at all so i wouldnt worry x

I looked for four months and I saw 14 horses before I got my brilliant mare, and until her, not one was described correctly. Sadly I lost her within 11 months, and 8 months on I still can't bring myself to look for another, its horrible looking, but when you find the right one, its all worth while. Please dont rush into it just for the sake of it though, its always pays off to wait for the right one.

Hi Kirst - mine is the 'little bucker' post. I bought a horse from a dealer on 12th Aug. He seemed ideal for the 1st 3 weeks until without warning he took off and put an almighty buck in and sent my instructor out of the front door. We gave him the benifit of the doubt and he did it again 2 weeks later and then again with a friend. My friend (who events) landed quite heavily on her back and hurt herself. I then decided he had to go back. It's been a bit of a wrangle and I haven't got all my money back but they are now collecting him at the end of the week. With a private seller it would have been buyer beware. He had been imported from Holland a month prior. I might be terribly naive, but I don't think they realised he bucked. It wasn't a 'isn't life grand buck' it was a real nasty one! I had looked at 14 horses before Clive and tried to be really cautious. I don't think I dare start looking again. Don't be put of buying from a dealer though. If it does prove not to 'do what it says on the tin' you have a better chance of returning it. Good luck

I have just bought a beautiful 6yr old, 16hh ISH for bsja and eventing. I had been looking for a while and was really getting disgruntled with the nonsense on some of the private ads. After a Saturday of viewing several 'not what they said on the tin' horses I went to a local dealer (which I have never done before) and found Paddy. so far so good, he seems to be exactly what i had been lokoing for and at a good price. So maybe consider a reputable dealer.

Ditto pretty much. I viewed over 30 horses before I found my young mare at a dealers. They actually had a selection of horses ALL un-doubtably better for the money than anything I'd viewed at a private sale. I've had her about four months and apart from occasional baby moments she has done everything asked of her and I couldn't have hoped for a nicer horse. I had another lovely horse for six years that also came from a dealer. The ones to watch out for IMO are the dealers who don't advertise that they are dealers and pretend they are private sellers.

Kirst, it may be worth trying Doug Aldred in Preston, he is a dealer with a very good reputation, we have recently bought a mare from him & she is proving to be everything he described her as. Know other people who have bought from him and would recommend him.
