New and a Question re:Towing Vehicles

Hello

I am new to the forum but have lurked for a long time. I have one 16.3 TB who is my first horse and an absolute dream.

My question is about vehicles for towing. Looking at replacing my car with something i can tow with. Needs to tow 2 horses and ifor 510 which I can hire from my yard cheaply as and when required, as it is much nicer going places with friends.

BUT needs to be economical in day to day driving. I have a 18 mile commute to my livery yard (its fab and would never move) and go at 5 times a week (he is on part livery). At the moment my car does on average about 50mpg which i know I wont get in a 4x4 but want something as close as possible. Dont mind if mpg drops considerably when towing but needs to go up in normal day to day.

Not too bothered about luxuries. Would prefer newer cars as they are usually better mpg and have a budget of around £20K.

What would be your suggestions.

Borrowed a Nissan X Trail a couple of weeks ago while our ancient Merc was off the road - that was very nice inside, seemed to be reasonably economical (we only did a couple of short trips to the vets).

No idea on what the prices are - we only spend a max of £2.5k on cars!!!

It's very nice indeed and economical, but not enough towing capacity for an IW510 and 2 horses I'm afraid.
 
If you need to pull a 510 with 2 horses you'll need a pretty hefty 4x4, I'd be suprised if you could get more than 25mpg out of it...

I have a 2001 shogun 3.2did and its great, pulls my 510 and horse with no trouble but it is very thirsty
 
unfortunately there isn't an economical 4x4 that tows 2 horses in a 510 I have researched again and again, landrover's are great to tow with and fairly good on fuel considering they tow up to 3500kg, mitsubishi are good too my husband has one and it is worse on fuel day to day than our land rover discovery 3 was, when looking keep an eye on the towing capabilities even if the car is massive they can't actually tow as much as you think. the only other 4x4 that tows 3500kg was Mercedes ML, but we did look at the volvo xc90 seemed to be better on fuel, but towed 2700kg depends on the weight of the horses you want to tow, my 511 ifor gross weight is 2700kg, so I think that would be enough.

£20 k ??? why not spend 10 on a realy tidy second hand shogun or discovery instead and save yourself a fortune in depriciaton and at the same time get something that will tow safely... nothing that will tow two horses will do better than about 30 mpg
