Hi everyone
After seeing the success of my friends boy who has recently had his shoes removed and researching for a long time I finally plucked up the courage to remove my boys back shoes. He will have them off 2 weeks this thurs. I have some pics from the day they were removed and would love some cc / comments. I'm particularly worried about the crack that's growing down. Looks like it should have been an abcess but he hasn't had one in the 2.5yrs I've had him. Hopefully photo bucket works here it's my first attempt!

It's definitely an old abscess hole. Don't worry though, it was over a few weeks ago and will grow out with no issues. :)

How's he coping so far?

He is doing v well! Been sound since day 1 and no footiness. They are starting to look quite untidy now which us freaking me out a bit and they are "smaller" than they were shod. By the end of his cycle he would have started squaring his toes a bit so I'm worried about that but fine so far. Could he have had an abcess and been fine?! Will it not cause colossal cracking when it gets towards the bottom?

BF hooves generally do look shorter than shod ones. He'll just be chipping off the excess horn, if you want to keep them tidier, then some people get a rider's rasp or radius rasp to run round the edge of the hoof. Some abscesses don't make them very lame, or they pop quickly and the worst of the lameness can occur while you're not there (eg overnight). Don't worry about the exit hole. When it gets right to the bottom, the farrier might take that section off.

Very nice, well done.

Would agree with Faracat; arm yourself with a rasp and put on a cosmetic roll. Will maintain tight white line, control left lateral flare and sort drain site once it has made its way down.

But how would I know when to stop rasping id b so scared if causing any damage! I will see if I can find some vids on YouTube etc

Should I not let his flares stay? I thought they must b supporting the leg in some way?

Always a good point to make and not easy to tell if this is additional growth due to mediolateral imbalance with nowhere else to go or an asymmetrical deviation supporting an imbalance in the limb.

But rasp it anyway. Put on a cosmetic roll only and maintain it once a week in order to retain a tight white line by taking away the ground force reaction that is pushing the wall up (and to look super trick!).

You are not rasping off the flare but allowing it to grow out. In the case of a supporting deviation, it will not grow out, the white line will remain tight and the wall at the ground will become thicker.

I rasped edges every two weeks, took me a few goes to be confident, just ask farrier to do it for you every four weeks then as needed. Hoof is hard, you won't damage it easily.
