New BE flag pole rules

Hmmmm, while anything that increases safety is a good thing I actually think this would have made the badminton incident worse. The flag pole breaking limited the dmage caused and I think the incident would have been a lot worse is the pole hadn't ultimately snapped.

What damage could a stiff rubber do? Something should have been done about wooden flags long before the Badminton incident.

I meant that if the incident at badminton (horse impaling itself on a pole) had involved a flag pole that didn't break the incident would have probably been worse and that I really do think that any material rigid enough to be used as a flag pole (ie that doesn't sway too much in winds etc) would have caused the same injury under those circumstances.

What an example to the rest of the world. Analysis done of the incident, remedies evaluated and a decision for change made, all in the interest of horse and rider welfare following a fairly freak but tragic accident.

What a noteable difference to the attitude of the FEI in regard to blatent horse abuse. Analysis of the incident - yes; remedies evaluated - yes - a tribunal held; decision to change to promote horse welfare made - NO WAY - instead a complacent trivialisation of a horse's death.

Good on BE - boo to FEI

Sounds good to me - the incident at Badminton seemed to me to be a ghastly freak accident - but good to see a quick reaction fron BE .

As a fence judge , more velcro fastened flags would be welcome , you wouldn't believe how difficult it can be to attempt ' running repairs ' with a bit of string . I was a girl guide years ago , but never quite mastered the art of ' snakelashing '

It's not cruelty to snakes, it's all to do with fastening with string !

If these indeed are thought to provide better safety/less risk of injury then this is fantastic news. I presume they have done their research into the most suitable material WRT safety....??
