He is a 17.2 tb x cleveland by criminal law and is 14yrs old
he evented as a 5yr old, but has done nothing since. and before we got him (just under 2 months ago) he hadnt been ridden for over 2yrs, and before that only hacked since he last evented. His cnted isnt very developed hence braking into trot alot, and as you can see he still needs lots of condition and muscle ohh and excuse the long stirrups

** it was very windy hence the jumps falling down at the end!!

Thats funny when the wind blew down all your jumps at the end.
He looks nice, just rusty, but very honest with his jumping, it just lacks enthusiasm. I am sure more work and more demanding courses will bring out the best in him

he looks a sweet boy, but as you say fairly weak.

i would be doing a lot of gridwork with him to get him using himself properly and jumping from trot will also help as you teach him to put his weight back in canter.

also over exaggerate giving over the fence with your hands as he is quite tight through his neck and shoulders and needs to relax and drop more.

nice looking boy with a lovely canter rythym- are you planning to BE him next season?

looks a nice sort. why the big break in work? he needs to work much more forward on the flat. his trot is a bit mincy and his canter isnt going anywhere!! i would suggest you work him much more forward on a bigger stride, encouraging long and low (i know he isnt a baby but is in milage!) he looks a bit tight in his back and resists in his mouth. lunging would be a good addition to his work really moving forward and stretching his back! when he is really moving forward and through he will jump even better! enjoy and good luck

I liked the canter and the jumping vid but he didn't look quite sound in trot to me - maybe because he was not happy with the contact and so not going fluently?
Why did he have 2 years off?
Nice though - see much more TB than CB in him

deff agree - needs to go much more forward.. and he had been in for about 10 days due to weather and has very mild stringhalt, so i think thats why he looks a bit unbalanced behind. i noticed that too

lots of work to do for the eventing season!!

My advice woudl be to lay off the jumping and focus on flat work for a few more months. You have nothign to gain by pushing him too sonn before he is capable. He is honest and lieks his jumping and makes a nice shape. However i feel he is only getting over the jumps becasue he is honest and wanting to please. he is not tracking up at all and is not using him self.

Once you have given him time to fitten up and become stronger, his movement should hopefully improve and he should loosen up. i thought he also looked a bit uneven in the trot, and was quite stuffy. His back looks weak and he is obviously fiding it hard to use him self properly becasue he lacks the muscle and strength. Being a larger horse with a large frame he will need more time than a smaller , compacted horse. As he is not strong through his back jumping could damage it, and it would be a shame

i would say that you have taken the chance with him, you can see he can jump and enjoys it, so now put the work in to improve him flatwork and get him stronger. So that you may have years together having fun!
