New bridle, conditioning/protection advice pls

My new bridle has finally arrived!!

Before I start using it, should I be conditioning it (its a bit stiff!) to protect it? and if so what with?
I want to make sure I look after it properly

my saddler and the one at work both say 'no oil ever, the only thing to use is saddle soap'
