Hi all,

I have recently decided that I don't want to continue being a groom or be part of the equine industry as a job but instead enjoy it as a hobby and focus on getting my own horse. I was originally gonna go up to Newmarket and do their racing course for after secondary school (which I have) but I just want my own pony now lol.

If I'm being honest, I don't really know what I am interested in aside from horses and what to do as a career so I'm just looking for a bit of inspiration or just some word of advice or even fellow grooms thoughts.

Thank you. I am so sorry

I went to uni but came out wanting a different career but wasn't sure what. All I knew was I wanted something that gave me the stability and financial security for the horses.
I started temping for the local council in administration and I have progressed into senior management. It's not a career I would have dreamed of as a child but I really enjoy it, the Council offers a flexi scheme which is great to work around farrier, riding etc. And good opportunities for progression.

I did work 2 jobs when I first started though working eve and weekends to support the horses and run the house.

When I started working (after a degree and PhD) it was pretty tough to fit in a horse while working full time in an office. And this was pre- having children. But times have changed recently and the increase in working from home has meant a massive improvement in flexibility and reduced travel times. When thinking about your options, consider which jobs will give you some flexibility for your pony.

Without giving specific career advice I would say: if you start off with a horse in any job, marriage, having children, whatever you do in life, you have a chance of keeping it because you carve out the time. If you don’t have one, it’s harder to find the time later on. Get a pony and make it work!

ETA: if I were to go back to being -say, 20 - I would look for something like livery with accommodation in return for horse help, or something that would enable me to have my horse at home and still do a job.

How old are you OP?

What qualifications did you leave school with? Do you like learning new things and studying?

Did any subjects interest you at school?

Do you drive/have transport?

Computer literate? Good with numbers? Like working alone or in a team? Happy to work customer facing?

What colour is your parachute is a book often recommended on here when it comes to picking careers. I bought the teenage version for my 15yr old niece. I had a quick flick through and it looked good. Although American it helped guide you towards college and uni courses once you identify your interests or trades and apprenticeships.

That's what I was planning on doing too!! But I think I would want my own horse and keep it as a hobby- maybe do a little bit of eventing who knows at this point ?

Heya I'm currently 16 so very fresh out of school, my last day was Thursday last week so! Leaving with GCSEs but also have a "certificate" for a Google marketing course- the course was free and I was super bored so I did that for a few weeks. It seems obvious to go into marketing but the more I did more marketing things it just did not appeal

But thank you, I'll look into that book as well

I work in marketing and have done for 22 years. There are lots of different subjects and specialisms within that and some may interest you more than others - it’s a good and well paid career if this is important for you. I’ve managed to keep horses and compete throughout as it does pay the bills. But if I were to start again I might look more for something I really love. Not sure that helps…

I think you’ve already posted several threads in a similar vein under a different user name - it might be an idea to look again at some of the answers people gave you before
