Hi everyone

My 7 year old ISH eventer was diagnosed with hind gut inflammation following poor performance. My vet had recommended that I take her off all cereal, which i have, and he has given me Succeed to supplement her with, which I started on Thursday (16th September 2015).

I have never had this before can anyone advise me on how long their horse took to start to feel better? I would like to start her on a cereal free diet for the long term as soon as the vet advises. Someone did recommend Simple Systems feeds to me, has anyone used this.

I would be really grateful for any advice on management and if anyone knows how their horses problems started. Im not sure if she has had it for a long time, but she started to feel very flat, started stopping and not making distances around June time. I did put her on Dodson and Horrell Staypower mix, maybe this was the problem...who knows!!

Many thanks to anyone who can help

I haven't heard of Succeed, but my mare struggles with hind gut problems too. She's already on a cereal free diet and thrives on haylage balancer, but we still struggle with grass flushes, her most recent attack being after my energiser broke the evening I went away for 4 days, so she continuously broke through the electric fence and stuffed her face. So you may want to watch your horse's grass intake too!

Thanks for your help everyone. I thought some of the problem is that it's been so dry this summer we haven't had much grass. We are always careful with Spring grazing as we had a mare with laminitis years ago. How long did it take for your horses to start to feel better once treatment was started?

Hi Can I ask how the vet diagnosed hind gut inflamation? And a few more details about the symptoms? Just asking as my mare hasn't been 'right' over the last two months and I can't decide whether to talk to my vet or not!

Hi. He did a faecal sample, pretty easy really. He had also done blood tests, lameness assessment and scope for gastric ulcers which all came back normal. I had felt she was flat over since end of June. She started stopping at home when jumping and knocking poles, which is very unlike her. Up until this summer she had never had a competitive pole or ever stopped. She is not keen on flatwork so has always been hard work but she just wasn't forward when jumping. I had to start wearing Spurs, I thought she just needed more energy feeds early on. Went to a BE90 and retired on the xc course as she wasn't galloping normally I have brakes issues. She started also over this time to get very grumpy with doing her girth up.

I initially was worried about right hind limb lameness which the vet checked in July but was happy she was fine. Since reading up about hind gut inflammation they can have right hind limb oddness/lameness as it compresses the colon as they move so can come up short on it. She has also been a pain to put her hind studs in recently which again can be a symptom as it can be painful for them to hold up the hind legs for any length of time.

She has had treatment for just over a week now, essentially the vet said take her off all cereals and give her succeed supplement. On Friday she started to seem a lot more relaxed and settled in herself and was better with her girth.

Hope that helps. Do ask anymore questions if you need any further help

Thank you for all the information! My mare had colitis x in November last year, ended up in the equine hospital on a drip, and having a blood transfusion - very scary, as I thought I was going to lose her! She's made a good recovery, but since starting riding her again in the spring she's being off her feed and when ridden tense & stressy, running all the time! Had her back checked because to me she seemed as if she was in pain, but no problems there. Then I tried a Magnesium based calmer to try and help her relax and that made her worse!! There's nothing obviously wrong and yet she doesn't seem quite right.....
