New dog boosters?

Mr P took his dog to the vets today.
I’m a bit confused!
He had one injection today and has to go back in 3 weeks for another. He wasn’t over due.
So it’s not that he’s had to restart the course.
OH just said it’s how boosters are done now?
Really?! It seems a bit weird

He also has to have a fractured tooth removed, poor chap.
 
Oh ours had his done last week!

They aren’t making anymore of the old brand and to ensure cover, they are restarting on the new one which is why they have to go back- like their first ever jabs.
 
Thank you! I was just a bit confused. I’ve always been the vet trip taker and it’s the first time ever he did it and I thought he’d done something odd. That makes sense though.

When one of my dogs went in for her booster before Christmas, the vet told me they were changing to L4. I was not happy. She said it would involve starting again and coming back for a second one. She went off and found an L2 for me.
I thought there was trouble with L4 and most people rejected it. Can anyone explain please.
I have plenty of time now to make a decision but I am considering not vaccinating anymore. I go back to the old days when puppies were vaccinated then had a follow up a year later and that was it. My dogs are 5 and 6 and have had plenty of vaccinations. Some people think they are detrimental to health . One of my dogs is a flatcoat and they do have a bad record of cancers and such like. Difficult decision.
I did discuss it with the vet but she just said it was my decision.
 
Mine have L4 every year and always have done. But mine are in high risk environments, if yours do t wallow in puddles, stagnant ditches and smelly ponds I suppose it’s not so necessary.
 
I changed to L4 a couple of years ago and will continue with that annually.

My dog is due to have core vaccination booster this year. I'm going to have titres done instead and see where we go from there.

I thought of doing that but I think mine still need L4, to be sure. Will check though.

There is no evidence of increased reported reactions to L4 vs L2. The vast majority of dogs have been receiving L4 for many years without issue.

I have a small cohort of mostly show clients insistent on L2 who are now switching to L4.

What are your thoughts about titre testing to see if DHP is necessary? Or should I just go ahead and have booster done?

I'm happy to either titre test or booster as per clients preference. Titres are more expensive so clients generally end up opting for boosters. We only give DHPPi on a 3y cycle and Lepto annually +/- KC as required
 
Thank you Clodagh , your dogs do lead a high risk life, mine don’t. They go in the sea almost daily, salt is cleansing, then they wash the salt out of their coats in a fresh water stream on the way home! They don’t get in the mud and dirt round the farm theses days much either.
I am obviously behind the times about L4 but I am sure early on it did cause problems. I have until next August to make a decision!

I always assume that my vet does not want to kill my dog. I don’t subscribe to the ‘they are so desperate to maximise profits they compromise your dogs to do so’ as seems to be the FB POV.
And a friend, a fellow picker, lost his very best dog to lepto last year… not just the loss of a dog he loved very much but a huge loss of time and money in training. He told me about how ill the dog was and I thought if I could avoid mine ever being that ill I’d do what I could to avoid it.
And yes that’s all a bit holier than though but why do people believe anti vaxxers on social media over a trusted, qualified scientist?

That has never been the case everywhere or for everyone, it always depended where you lived and was never the best idea .
Town and city dogs were relatively safe treated as above, country dogs not so much.

The vaccine-induced immunity does not last for life. How long it lasts is very variable from one dog to another .

The reason not boosting was "ok" for some dogs in some places is those dogs were continually meeting small doses of viruses while out and about, so by the time their vaccines wore off they were effectively "boosted" by the wild versions they got from sniffing pavements etc. It was always a very risky strategy. You would never know if your dog has "had his booster" naturally or not. If you live in a "nice" neighbourhood where the other dogs are vaccinated your dog will be less likely to have been boosted naturally.

Every vet I know of (daughter is a vet so know quite a few) vaccinates their own dogs. No profit involved for them doing that, so that's good enough for me, some of these FB pages are ridiculous.
 
I live near a river and have seen rats in the garden (boke) so it's a no brainer for me. A dog that did quite well at the world championships last year nearly died a month or two beforehand after splashing in a stream away from home and picking it up. I'll take my chances with the 'vaccine damage' rather than what lepto does.
 
One of my MIL’s friends sons ( he was a groom ) died of lepto just after I met MrGS I have also been super careful about it.
 
can someone save me googling and let me know if there's a titre test for lepto?

Ignore me, there isn't.

Is it just the 3 times they need to have it for full immunity?

When my dog changed from L2 to L4 she had to have a second dose of L4 a few weeks after the first, then annually.
