We have a new dog, he came to us from a rescue centre last Sunday. He is about seven or eight, and we know nothing of his history (the home weren't at liberty to give reasons why he was rehomed, other than it was no fault of his own).

So, we have the normal recommendations, keep him on a lead for a fortnight, always use a harness etc etc... of course we ignored all of that, we took him home and fired him out into our field for a good run around. That's when we discovered he is a trained gundog - and I mean fully trained!

Worked the hedges, quarters, sits, stays, heels, waits for food to be put down, then searched out a dead chicken (don't ask!) and retreived it to hand, gently, gave it up no problem at all. Never gets too far ahead on walks, and is delighted to be living with us.

I'm not going to post a pic, or his name, as I think he was rehomed through necessity, not choice, and I would hate for someone to recognise him, but I'm just so pleased that he's a happy older dog, and he's going to have such a fab time out beating and picking up this winter with my OH. Before we discovered his level of training I was feeling a bit guilty about taking him on, I felt that maybe he should be a family dog, with kids etc, but he is just aching to do whatever you ask of him, and his character is starting to shine through more and more!

Pointless, but self indulgent happy post!

Oh you lucky thing!!!

I will be short of dog power this season for picking up so if you fancy loaning him out for the season just let me know!!!!

Thanks everyone, he is an absolute star! Ravenwood, you can have him with pleasure but you will have to take the lunatic five year old Springer bitch too (and come to think of it, possibly my husband too!), so me and my lurcher can curl up undisturbed in front of the fire!
