New dog??

Ok - I'm struggling living in the city (wish i was back with my mums girls in the country!) and i think i would be a lot happier if i had my own doggy!

Me and OH work full time but can work at home on some days, so one of us could be at home most days and if not i (think) our next door neighbour would help out.

What do you think we should get?? My mum has a border terrier who is really chilled untill she goes for her walk, but i was also thinking of a rescue grey hound as i hear they are really good pets.

I want the dog to be happy, any suggestions???
 
I'd say if you do get a dog, get a lurcher or greyhound. They sleep alot and don't need much exercise. two 20/30 minute walks a day is all they need. not much. but in return they will love you forever, but they are sofa lovers!!

edited to say, my two do get alot of exercise, but when at home would rather sleep on the sofa next to you, which will be nice for cold winter evenings!!!
 
Do you know much about whippets? We've only got a little house! I think i would rarther rescue a dog though but i don't konw much about it. x
 
i dont know alot about whippets, but although greyhounds are big, what about a lurcher, they can be anything from whippet sized to greyhound sized. My Ben is a bedlington X whippet X greyhound and is 24" at the shoulder, but can squeeze into the tiniest of places on the sofa!!

I think dogs and city life can work together if you're willing to spend the time walking them when you can and are careful about the breed you choose!

Id follow the advice of the people who posted above (Im not terribly up on breeds im afraid) and maybe speak with rescue centres / breeders on their thoughts
 
There are so many ex-racing greyhounds needing homes, an older one would be even lazier than a youngster and they have the gentlest natures.The bitches are a nice manageable size and she'll be curled up on the settee most of the time anyway! . I've never had one myself but know loads of people who have and they would never have anything else.
 
I live in NYC and can honestly say that dogs and cities can work well if, like others say, you're willing to put the time in walking them.

Unique to NY is the concept of "dog parks". We go to one, about three acres in size, that's great. All the dogs run around and play together. And then there's Central Park, too, for mammoth games of fetch and nice walks

Even if you don't have access to spots where your dogs can run around off the leash, certain breeds and older dogs will be more than content with a nice amble and plenty of snuggle time on the sofa.
 
Go to the retired greyhound rescue and get one of those much deserving dogs. It broke my heart when i went to see them. They are truely wonderful dogs and there are hundreds out there that are looking for a loving home.

We dont have a big place and i am at uni/work full time. They don't actually want lots and lots of walks, they prefer to sleep! They are very clean dogs, mine has never lived in a house but she has been dry since we've had her and they do not smell very doggie because of their thin coats.

Go to your local rehoming place and have a look to see what's there and what catches your eye. (my next door neighbour went looking for one datchound but came out with two rottweilers)

My dog and cat were from a rehoming place.
My old dog and cat (not with us any more) were from a rehiming centre
