I have a submissive gelding and a very dominant mare that need to go in a field together (no others in with them).

The gelding, although very quiet and the type who keeps himself to himself, won’t turn out on his own- hence putting them together.
The mare has always been at the top of the pecking order no matter what kind of horses she is turned out with, isn’t afraid to kick out and possibly corner another horse if she feels she needs to. These horses know each other but have never really been turned out together.

How would you go about introducing the two?

TIA x

It should work well as the mare has no need to be too bossy if the gelding backs off and keeps out of her space, I would introduce them on either side of a fence then once I felt happy I would put the mare into the geldings area, putting her into his field should prevent her being so defensive or protective as it is not her space to control even if it is only short term before they move into the whole field.
If I ever have a dominant one if I can I move them into a new field rather than put the new one in with them, it does seem to help reduce any territorial behaviour.

Thankyou for your reply! Yes I think doing that might make the move easier for them both. They’ve been on the same yard for two years so I’m hoping they realise that they know each other already

Sounds like my 2! When the gelding first turned up we had a squealy, girlie ' get off my hay' strop, but by the next day they were inseparable.

So much so that I kept him when his owner wanted to sell him on.....

I have a very dominant gelding and a not particularly submissive, but non dominant mare. I put them in the same field, but separated with electric fencing for a while until they had had a scowl and squeal and got used to each other. They were pretty quickly friends as they had no one else and both love a good groom. They are great together now, although mare has to toe the line.
