My horses have been in since Friday as the feeble one lost a shoe and was crippled. Farrier is on his way so I can put them out again. I am going to put them on the hayfields as they can drink from the river, I am fed up with lugging water carriers and breaking ice! The youngster has been down there before but the two older ones haven't. Will they find the water jump or do I need to show them? (That may be tricky as they will be VERY excited). Youngster knows but he is bottom of the pecking order so may not think not to just follow the others.
Thoughts?

Way better solution than lugging water to them, why make work for yourself? ;):)

They will probably find it for themselves as they investigate the field, but if they don't appear to have done so, perhaps wait until they have got themselves un-excited, catch them up and lead them down there just for your own peace of mind.

The youngster will probably go for a drink when he is thirsty anyway.

Thank you for that. I will hope they work it out then, at least with all the snow I can see where they have been.
No way could I have led them to it now, it was all we could do to contain them until we got to the field and the headcollars off, last seen bucking, farting and making snow angels.

Will they come to call? I don't know about yours, but mine come to a shout on the chance that there's some food on the go. If so, I'd call them to the water so there is no doubt. I had one that could not find the trough (although all the others knew) and I suspect that might have caused a compaction, so I am possibly over cautious.

Yes they come to call, in fact if you go in the field they won't leave you alone. I will check them first thing and see how they are doing.
