Hi.. I'm looking at going to the new forest with a friend and our horses for our holiday this year and wondered if anyone had any recomendations, of places for the horses to stay and us, we are happy to camp and on a budget

Not sure if they do camping in tents, but they def do caravans/horsebox maybe?

Stud Farm Livery in Sway, Mead End Road.

We ride past regularly and friends horse is there. They do holiday livery too and 10 minute stroll to the forest! X

Lots of others I am sure but I dont know them off the top of my head

If you google Fleetwater Stud the lady who runs it is absolutely lovely.
She will rent out stables/paddock on a per night basis, will let you camp and has a shower room you can use. Pub within walking distance!

Thanks ihatework, I have actually been looking at fleetwater, do you know if there is much road work envolved or if you can hack straight in to the forest? If there is road work are they busy roads?
Thanks x

There is a bit of roadwork, about 15 mins into the forest.
Some is on a B road through the village (some traffic but not awful), the rest on more like single track road with little traffic

Most places will involve some roadwork. Fleetwater Farm is about 400 yards to the cricket pitch and open forest, but further roadwork (2/3 miles) to get to the top end of Minstead, Stoney Cross etc - these are by no means main roads though.

You could try Skers Farm in Brook. This is a family run yard about 100yards along a single track road from the forest, very near the Rufus Stone, where you can ride as far as Burley or Godshill without roadwork. During the summer there will be stables available and/or grazing. PM me if you would like their contact details or look up the postcode: SO43 7HD to see the location. It is very easy to get to from the M27, and they may also have accommodation available.

You could look at Decoy Pond Farm (02380 292652, postcode SO42 7YQ) is near Beaulieu. It used to be a riding/livery stable, and right out there in the middle of nowhere, with very good forest hacking to Beaulieu, Brockenhurst and Burley.

There is also Arniss Riding Stables, (http://www.arnissequestrian.co.uk/ - tel. 01425 654114 - post code SP6 2JX) which is Godshill, on the Fordingbridge side of the forest, and has no roadwork involved.

Arniss and Decoy Pond wouldn't be as easy to get to as Skers Farm. I am not sure whether they do what you are after, but are worth a try. Have a look at their locations on a map, and see which part of the Forest will suit you best. Hope you find somewhere suitable.

I keep mine near Fleetwater...the roads are very quiet and you are not far from fabulous riding. Also there is a super cute little tea shop right by it in Minstead and a pub!

I haven't had any trouble with motorists, if you are very worried you could lead them along some of it, lots of tree stumps around for hopping back on!

They often do clinics at Fleetwater too...I haven't been but you could also look on www.nfed.co.uk for more new forest info including clinic dates.

Thank you for takin the time to reply, my friend and I definitely like the look of fleetwater, I just hope we dont bumb in to to much traffic

xx

I thought of this thread when I drove past today....I think its impossible to avoid roads in the New forest...but with many of them you can ride alongside the roads. From Fleetwater you cannot avoid them, but if you are concerned then you can lead them up the worst ones. The lady there will give you advice about where to ride too.

I did think of something else...have either of you got a GPS? I have been in the foreast for a few years now and I still manage to get lost...I have met many others who are lost too....My friend always used a GPS...so if you can borrow one then do! Also speak to the lady at fleetwater ref bogs! we have had so much rain you will need to look out for bogs.

Have fun...it really is lovely and the foalies will be popping out soon so you might see a few!! :)

Thanks parker79, I think we should be ok, if they are just minor roads, yes I did think of gps, I have my iPhone so will make sure I have one on there before I go... I'm sooo excited!! X
