I have a couple of questions.. if anyone has the time.

What did they grow from 2.5 years old to full grown- i.e did they get much bigger?
Do yours have withers? My NF has no withers and a flat back - I think saddle fitting is going to be a nightmare- what brands have you used that seem to fit.

Finally, going through rugs hes 2.5 years old and in a 5'9 which I think is massive for a 13.2hh pony- what size is yours in?

Sorry about all the Q's but im used to TB's and I.D types.

Thanks in advance.

Can't comment on growing as I bought him when he was 8.

He's got reasonable withers (though not as prominant as my TB's) and it is a medium/wide fit GP saddle.

He's 14.1hh and in a 6ft rugs but he's quite wide so have to be careful about makes else they are too tight in the shoulders and across him bum!

aww thanks for that- i thought he was randomly large in rug sizes but obviously not (there is a 16.1tb on the yard in the same rug size ah him!!) hmmm looks as though saddles might be a problem though...

Had and bred NF's all my life. They really do come in very different shapes and sizes I'm afraid. I currently have two 2 year olds, the colt is 13.3hh and takes a 5' 9" and the filly is 13hh and takes a 5'3".
As far as saddles go, I love the Ideal H&C and WHP saddles. I have flat backed ones and some with withers. Regarding growing, I've had them grow a full 4ins from 3-6yrs. Hope that is some help, just out of interest, what is your boys breeding?

Hi, that is also really useful regarding the saddle brands. Im hoping he will make 14hh as he's 13.2 at the moment-his reg'd Name is Fidleywood Steely Knight, his sire is Matley Crusader and Dam is Fidleywood Flite.

Mine's currently 3 going on 4 so not sure regarding how big and what age.
She's around 13.3hh at the moment.
Regarding withers - this is one of the best pics to show hers - not much but it's there.

She's also in 5'9 and I find Amigo is the best brand for both of mine (as has my friend for her natives). I found Masta too wide in chest (even with a very broad highland in a 6'3 rug).

My highland sounds very similar to your Newfie and was a nightmare to fit a saddle to. I have an old jeffries event saddle which fits her perfectly.

i noticed his sire is matley crusader!

I wonder if he has connections with my old new forest who will about 15 now,
Matley Armani????? known as Mattie he won Ponies UK and was a always winning M&M WHP and showing with me!

mine is 13.2 and has a 6ft rug and he has a flat back and hardly any withers, he has a saddle company saddle.

I bought him when he was just turned 5 and he has not grown any taller but he did become more chunky and wider.

My chap is 4 1/2 and is bum high....again!
He's in a 5ft 9 rug and stands a shade over 14hh........he has your typical native build, flat back, no withers(plus big belly!), and his current saddle is a Thorowgood Griffin dressage, although once money allows I want a Saddle Company saddle for him.

I like Crusader, very nice.
If you go to www.nfstallions.co.uk you can see some pictures of him at this years stallion passing. Worth a look if you're interested and haven't seen him.
ahhh wow, i'd only ever seen a side on shot of his dad not a head view! Howie has got the big neck- I wonder how big his dad is as it could help let me work out if he'll make the 14h I'm after- although I could ride him now as I'm only 5'3

looks like Howie is typical then! I shall cross my fingers for 14hh!

My Boy is NF x ID and he's in 5'9 at 2 and half years old. Quite high withers but still no chest (as such) he's starting to finally fill out and currently at about 14.2hh. seems to have a big head and thick neck...What a mixture

Hi,

My NF was about 13.1 at 3 years old. She is now 13.3 at withers, and 14.0 - 14.1 at rump and 5.5 years old. Hope she evens out at 14.1hh. Thought she would stay at 13.1 - 13.2hh, so feel pleased. It's only a few inches, but seems to make a big difference.

My pony also has no withers and very chunky. I have a synthetic Maxam cob saddle for her as it is lightweight, and as she has only just started to be ridden it's cheap and cheerful if it get damaged. I find it quite cumbersome to ride in and would love a leather saddle when she has finished growing.

All the best.

Yes, he will get bigger and he will also fill out

I have used Ideal, GFS and pessoas on our 4

6ft to 6ft 3 rugs as adults.

Fantastic breed, sorry we have had to sell ours to go up to Seniors (S/J).
Have fun.

mines a dutch newforest so slightly different but she wears 6ft rugs and shes only 14.1 and i would recommend you try harry dabbs saddles as the saddle we got for ours fits very well

My rising 4 yr old NF is just in a 5ft 9 as my filly needed his 5ft 6 amigo :)

He sounds like a pip squeek compared to your lot. He's about 13.2hh and I really hope he makes 14hh as I am 5ft 8 and may well have to start riding him if no-one else offers LOL

Great breed but very smart and naughty so don't think he'll be suitable as the boys first pony as he has an almighty sense of humour - the wicked wicked boy! He's a great playmate and surrogate big brother for my filly though.
