We were visiting the New Forest before Christmas and saw this advertised in a pub. Am I right in thinking it's not the sort of point to point that I know? What does it entail? I'd love to go if I'm ever in the area at the right time!

There are no fences, it is a race around the Forest. Most of the races are for New Forest ponies and it looks great fun...pony squishing at it's best

Yes you are Holly Hocks. It truly is a 'point' to another 'point' in the forest, roughley 3 miles I think. The riders will be told where the finish is beforehand but the start is kept secret until the day to prevent anyone practising. The 'course' runs over the forest, tends to involve navigating bogs, woodland ditches and the like! There are several classes, one for pure bred nf ponies, one of x bred and a open, childrens and over 50s.

Yes it is old fashioned "point to point". The finish area is advised (the rough area) in advance, the meeting point for the start is disclosed the day before (you have to phone up on Christmas Day to get it). Then from that you have to use your powers of deduction and hope you are right!
If you know the forest at all, this year the meeting point was Ashurst Campsite, the finish was at Beaulieu Road, above where the lorries park at the Sales. I missed the actual starting points where they started the races from I'm afraid.

Sounds brilliant fun! I got my first unbroken NFx last year and am currently backing her - she's a fab pony and it's really given me a taste for the breed - I'm even losing my passion for TBs for this breed! I definitely have to get down there one year for this P2P!
