I just read a link from one of the lounges/forums on here and was absolutely shocked at the number of New Forest ponies, foals, donkeys, etc killed by traffic ... absolutely stunned silent. Whilst I know accidents happen, surely, surely something could be done to reduce the figures, many I am sure are totally unnecessary, I don't know what, any suggestions? I am not a New Forester, would love to be, but would welcome input from locals, New Forest users, etc.

The post was in Latest News and under post New Forest Verderers press release. There is a link from there to the Verderers site. I apologise, am fairly new here and am not sure how to add links.

No answers from me I'm afraid.

Not all accidents can be avoided, I think we all know that deep down, but many many of these accidents come about because people are driving too fast and not taking enough care. The speed limit is 40, so many break that limit, many of them locals who ought to know better but apparently do not give a toss. It will get worse as the foals get bolder and go further away from their dams. Personally I always think August is the worst month for that.

I think there was a campaign to put reflective collars (around neck, not head collar-style) on them so they have more chance of being seen? I know a few do already but I'm always a nervous wreck driving around there myself, espec. after dark... :-(
