New Forest ponies/the Beaulieu sales

I’m thinking of going to the sales at the end of November to look at buy a youngster, but ive not had much experience with the breed. Obviously I like them though

Just wondered if anyone here has a NF pony, any tips, good bloodlines, anything they’re prone to etc etc. Also, how do the sales work? Will they all be fresh from the forest? Do part breds go through?
I do buy youngsters every year but usually Connemaras, so I’m not really familiar with NF ponies but I’ve heard so many good things.

The sale is on-line as some delightful toerags set a car on light which damaged the saleyard. They are very versatile, will turn their hooves to anything.

Entries close on the 3rd nov so the catalogue will be out after that. What size you after? The top price was for a young ridden up to height pony who made £5450.

I’d like a nice 14hh all rounder type, or a part bred to go a bit bigger.

I’ll eagerly await the catalogue then - that’s such a shame though, I was looking forward to a road trip!

Do they have any breed-specific issues like HWSD in Connemaras?

Absolutely. Happy to help. PSSM has become noticed in the breed but the society have been very diligent in tackling the issue. All stallions are tested for it. Some breeders are also testing their mares too. You can contact sellers to view their ponies, I actually went to see the top priced pony for my son! So you could still do a road trip. ?

There have been a couple of threads (atleast) on here with lots of opinions/remarks/photos. I too have experience of owning NF ponies, happy to help but not in the area any more. I can recommend breeders and breed lines. Also see New Forest Pony enthusiasts Club on fb/website and New Forest Pony People on fb. Once again plenty of photos, news and even ponies for sale and loan sometimes.

Dopey question, if the foal is forest bred so you actually know who the sire is?
We had one years ago but he was in a field with his dam, we didn’t go to the sales.

In simple terms (i can only do simple!) The forest is 'split up' into areas and a stallion is allocated to run that area for a certain amount of weeks then taken off the forest until the following year, any mares in that area are assumed to be infoal by this stallion. The nfed website can offer advise and contact information. hope this helps

Certain stallions will "stamp" their offspring too. Pink ones with a blaze are quite likely to be by Thundercloud.

Mares will sometimes travel to find a stallion and the stallions can move areas. All the stallions are DNA tested so any queries about progeny can be resolved.

New Forests are fab. Certain stallions throw different sizes and types. Worth looking at a few different types to get your eye in. I love them but they are typical natives. Hardy clever and thrifty. Lami can be an issue of course. Wish I was a bit smaller. Although men traditionally ride them during the drifts.

Mine is the sire of Thundercloud. The main issue I have had with mine is weight control and for that reason I would not have another NF but that would apply to any other native breed or cob.

I have mine for 14 years. The two big issues I have had with him are weight control and escaping. Apart from that he has been very good for a rider of little talent I achieved a lot with him. He is very tolerant.

They have to undergo an inspection in the spring. Bloodlines are taken into consideration when choosing potential stallions. They only run in an area/district for 3 years at a time so inbreeding doesn't become an issue.

I'm scouring the for sale ads regularly looking at ponies to buy privately.
I will use a transporter to Cumbria which seems a long way for such a young pony!

We have had 5 now, either direct from the sales, or via someone who has 'rescued' one from the meat man before passing them on at cost. That was in the days before prices went silly. I wanted to teach my kids how you take a feral pony and 'make' it. Lovely ponies, and generally fairly steady. Very unlikely they'll bother much about traffic if they ran on the forest as a foal, for example.
They vary tremendously from short-backed 12hh ponies with loads of pzazz, beautifully suited to driving, to bigger ponies with more or less substance. Mine are by Lovelyhill Hendrix (2), Brookshill Mustang, Bakeburn Jethro and Farriers Rambler.
The pony in my avatar is the Brookshill pony, quite fine, and very horse-looking.

I adore him. His owner is on Facebook and would probably be delighted to answer your questions. He was highest marked at one of the gradings a few years back.

My new forest has her sire/dam on her sale papers too but she's 21 so it's probably different now ? having talked to owners of some half siblings though they are all very similar though, a lot of the nf stallions really do seem to stamp their stock.

That's the ad I was looking at. I've looked at quite a few on NFED - seems to be the site with most on.

There is a northern new forest ponies supporters group that might help if you are looking for ponies closer to home.

Welham Stud is based in Leicestershire and often has ponies available might be worth contacting them.
