i'm a welshie fan but it would be a connie all the way for me, they just have more prescence, and IMHO more altheletic ability than a new forest, i have owned a couple of newfies and TBH found them to be very uninspiring, the only one i like is wayland cranberry and he looks more like a mini sports horse!
Thats really tricky as I love both. A good, well bred NF wil rival a decent connie any day. The best bred connies are better than almost all NFs I've seen however.
Lots of NFs are poor quality (ok so theres some ropey connies round too but in general the quality appears to be better)
Both can be fab performance ponies so at the end of the day I would have to judge each individual pony rather than the breed.
Ets- forgot to say that Boss was part connie and Moon is part newfie which is why I'm split!!
Interesting poll but difficult as New Forest ponies are such a mish-mash of breeds, types and sizes that it is impossible to assess them overall. Over the centuries so many different breeds have been turned out to "improve" the breed, there is now no "typical" NF. There are ones that look Welsh (taking after the Welshies that were turned out some years ago), there are Araby ones that descend from the two Arab stallions that Queen Victoria turned out and, according to a local story, a TB stallion got loose one day (chucked his rider) and they didn't catch him for ages. Some really quality foals turned up at Beaulieu Road sales the following year but were registered as though they'd been covered by the NF stallion running in the area!! It might sound disloyal as I live there but Connemaras are probably better as they are a more consistent type. There are some very useful versatile NFs out there but they tend to be stud, and therefore more carefully, bred.
Love them both - I find connies a bit quirkier, but I like that lol Showing wise connies and NF are usually together and from my experience the judges often prefer a connie over a NF. I find connies usually carry a bit more presence but there are always exceptions!
I think my main point is people tend to turn there nosies up at New Forests, thinking them of hairy, fat and stumpy. When after most people have owned a propely breed New Forest they wouldn't go back.
The first pony I had on loan was a NF (people used to say she looked part Exmoor but I'm not sure, I reckon she was pure NF). She was a little ****! She would have made the MOST fantastic pony racer if only you could get her to go forwards when you wanted rather than when she wanted! We tried to turn her into a SJ pony, only she never ever figured out what to do with poles. Apparently she's still like this, I had her when she was 5 until about 8, she's now about 13 and is still a ****!
The only Connemara I know is Boss's little black one (well and Boss himself as a part-bred), he is such a fantastic pony but again only if you can persuade him that he wants to be! Very good looking though. If I had to chose one out of those two it would be the Connie.
I certainly don't have anything against NFs though, I've seen some fantastic children's SJers that have been NF, and some fantastic Connie eventers. So if I were totally unbiased, I'd say it depended on the individual pony.
I did write a long post about New Forest ponies but I lost it because of the poxy proxy crappy bit.. Aargh.
Anyway, a shorter version.. Here is NF I owned, Royal Edward (Rushmoor Royal).
Lovely pony, but as Forester said the NF ponies are such a mish mash.. I find too many stubborn and opinionated! The pic above shows a very talentated, nice natured yet lazy forester. I think the Connemara is far more consistent as a breed and generally makes a better performance pony. And I say that as a child brought up on NF ponies!! (I'm such a Judas!)
NF. The horse I ride is by waylands golden harry x with a random mare - we don't know what breed but I'm guessing she was big, lol!
He has the most sweet nature and he is a real character. Only thing I could fault him on, is he is lazy. And if I hadn't owned a fell I would say opinionated as well! But he doesn't come anywhere near fell-standard stubbornness!
I suppose we just click and suit each other really well. I would love to have another NF x any day. I wish I could ride a full NF but my legs would dangle on the floor!!
As others have said, it really depends on the NF individually - they are all different.
I owned a well bred NF, he was as cheeky as anything but a lovely boy and great fun. Nice jump but really more of a fun hacking/hunting/all round pony than a competition horse. He could go all day though, and was very smart.
So would generally say connie for a competition horse, NF for more of a fun allrounder.
edit to say - I think both can cross extremely well with tbs to make talented sport horses
