I've a lot of experience with most of the natives but I have never ridden a Dales, (although knew one) and believe I have never actually seen a NF in the flesh! They look incredibly smart and versatile and Id love to hear more about them and see photos of them doing different things. How are they as mounts for small adults (about 8 1/2 stone) , do they like to jump and how sharp are they compared to say Connies and Welsh Cobs? Is the height limit 14.2hh or do they go over? Chocolate fudge cake all round to those who share:D

My boy is 13.3/14hh.

Lived on the New Forest until he was 5.

Very intelligent but can alternate between sharp and sensitive and ASBO tendencies :D

I struggled with him for a fair amount of time - but then started doing the naughty P-word with him and personally haven't looked back.

I'm 5'6/5'7 and weigh about 10.5 stone - never struggled with me. Grown men ride then on the New Forest regularly!

Hopefully pic will work my 14.2hh 20yr old new forest.

Sorry - to clarify, mine is sharp but met plenty of not-so-sharp one's too!

I think there is a lot of variety among the breed - maybe more so than other Natives, IMHO.

My Newfy is the sweetest thing ;

She does SJ, XC, dressage and she is 100% in traffic, can't upload from photobucket at the minute, but check out my albums, there are pics there! Oh and she's 13.3hh and 16yo, she's in my sig aswell

My boy is about 13.3 now but 3 ish so will probably get a bit bigger. He's not been backed but is quite sharp on the ground and the children have already decided that he's going to be mine :). He's the first pony I've had that has bucked and spun round in the air whilst being led

I have 3, one very sporty, athletic - looks like a small thoroughbred (with a frizzy mane!). Absolute cracker, totally amenable, beautiful to hack, not spooky, total gent in all ways and makes nothing of a decent 3ft track, at 6. He's now on loan to a pc family and is out hunting jumping whatever he is pointed at! I have another 11 year old, its been a long haul with him, he had a lot of confidence issues when we got him, so had to battle with running off when ridden and spookiness, but is now the most chill chappie with cracking paces and had jumped 4ft9, is spooky sj still but with go double clear round a 3ft sj easily, and hunts like a machine and will jump anything with a decent lead horse! He's not hot but very responsive and can be very strong, but won't tolerate anything more than a snaffle in his mouth. Our last one is a beautiful little mare, used to be the work of the devil, got her wild and took us a long time to get her to accpt us, she's very confident with things she knows but does not like to be pushed out of her comfort zone- she will tell you when she is ready- she's just started canter work at 5 after being broken late 2011, she is now really sweet and chilled out, but she definitely needed the time we gave her to sort herself out mentally. All of them are totally sweet, wouldn't hurt a fly anymore and are the most loving and forgiving ponies I've had the pleasure of having, despite all being very different personalities, can you tell I adore them? :)

Make fantastic rides for small adults :D I'm quite tall (5ft 10) but have had a load of fun on foresters. Great all rounders IMHO :D

I've got one. Never actually intended to have one though. realistically I need something bigger but hes too strong for your average kid and easily becomes bolshy if allowed. He is very spooky too!

I do love him though. Hes rising five and forest bred.

He's pretty chunky though but fine enough to be smart.

This is my Forester. She's Forest bred, I've had her since she was 8 months old, I got her 2 days after she came off the Forest. She's 11 now. I show her locally and at county level, she's been to Ponies UK several times too. She is the proverbial chestnut mare :o When she is good she is very very good but sometimes she can be a miserable witch :o She does jump (over the elec fence  ) but showing is her forte :)

I have a NFx - does that count ?- all I know of her is that she was born on the forest and I contacted the owner of that particular herd as I found his details on the passport. He said that she was out of a one-eyed 13hh coloured mare but that it could have been any one of four stallions that is her sire as she ran in an area with four of them.
She will be 4 in May and is backed and now lightly hacking out a couple of times per week. She was the easiest horse ever to back, is wonderful out hacking on the roads and a real character. I absolutely adore her and if I was ever getting another horse I would definitely get another NF or NFx. I can't express how much I adore this pony.

This is her last summer in her favourite position

This is her about to win her youngstock class last September.

yay yay yay :D :D :D :D :D A thread where im allowed to talk about my pony for hours and hours :D :D :D

This is Douglas a 9yo forest bred :) He is 14hh but rides like a 16.2, and is the best thing ever! Ive had him since he was 4 and we have done everything together but we now mainly do dressage as that is what we both love :) currently competing novice level but working elementary at home and gained our highest score of 71.92% this weekend :)
Anyway, enjoy my millions of pics :D

Now at 5ft 8 and 9 1/2 stone I do feel guilty riding him so I hop off for the hills and he walks like a well trained dog :D

He is totally chilled and a real poppet. I have never met such a genuine laid back trainable pony. He is clever and will escape through most fencing with ease. But he is fun and very cuddly :D

Shadowboy - mine is forest bred and rising 6 this year and looks very similar to yours......How is yours bred ? Mine is Portmore Tempest x Rushmoor silver strands ( rushmoor def but need to look on passport to confirm dams full name )

Mine is fidleywood flite x Matley crusader apparently but being forest bred who really knows for sure!!! They are similar though! Mine is 13.2 how big is yours?

Ours, or should I say mine but my daughter does the riding :D, is a 14h bay, think it's same sire as Rachelstar's but his forte is showjumping, he doesn't quite see the point of dressage - he's one that prefers doing things his own way although he is getting better, just starting Novice and aiming for 65%+ this spring we hope following a bit of practise over the winter.

With jumping which he adores, whether over the electric fence or down a line of grids, and with a confident rider he is very very careful (can do silly spooks and refuse if rider is not confident), he can be pretty quick even though he is on the leg at each corner stocky side rather than slim wizzy pony style - came 4th out of a class of 104 on Saturday for example.

And if you take him hunting be warned he is very strong and keen!

I will say he is a pleasure to own, he's excellent to handle, but is also quite a character and has his quirks!

those I've known have definitely been less sharp than welshies or connies though equally a bit more limited in their athleticism (although there are some very good jumpers out there too). Very nice people to have about though

I have a new forest and I am about 8.5 stone and a very nervous rider.

My new forest is not sharp, I have had him since a 5 year old and he loves jumping, sponsored rides, hacking out, Le Trec. He also does dressage and we have won an open prelim. He has a lovely friendly nature as well.

The downsides are he is not keen on being stabled - will jump out so he lives out and he tends to get fat very easily.

I was originally looking for a connemara but they were very expensive so I was priced out and so ended up with a new forest which are much more reasonably priced as they are a less fashionable breed.

Best ponies ever. Have had my forest bred since she was 8 months, she's now 24. She has always been super willing to try her hoof at anything. She is quite hot, with a wicked buck but when it really counts I know I can depend on her.

My next pony will without any doubt be a NF!

My first pony, still have him a 13h nf gelding, got him at 5 took him about 8 years to settle down but done everything pony club fun rides you name it he'll do it. Lovely and balanced to ride with no schooling

I love them am too tall and heavy these days to ride them but have when i was younger still work with them as lead rein and kids ponies i find them to be tough hardy good doers full of character really clever and cheeky make fab games ponies, not met a bad one yet, the last one i looked after was 36 still fit and healthy and doing lead rein hacks with the little uns and had the adorable name of brocoli named by a 5yr odl girl many many years ago

You will not be disappointed if you get one.

My boy, who i lost in november to cancer, lived up to 22.
I got him at 20 but i'm told he was a ****** in his day. He was calm, kind and had a temperament to die for, yet my god, if you were in the mood for a gallop, he could feel it in your seat and he'd take you over stubble, through rivers, over bridges. Did well in internet showing. I know it doesn't count but who doesn't love rosettes?? :D
My mare is Appaloosa X Newforest but she doesn't have their easygoing nature. I'm looking to swap her for a newforest gelding, i dont even care if i have to go smaller!
Here he is, I will never, ever forget him.

I've got one. Never actually intended to have one though.

This made me lol I never intended to get one and i've got two :p I've always loved welshies and always wanted a conni. :o

My two boys are both forest bred and are of similer breeding.
Herbie is a naughty opinionated pony. He's sharp (although not spooky at all), grumpy and likes to get his own way all the time. He's only 12.2hh ish but we do everything. Hunting, dressage, showing, showjumping.

Merryn my other one couldn't be more diffrent. He's the sweetest chap you could hope to meet. Very food orientated but very obliging in every way. If he steps out of line you can almost hear him appologise. ;) He's 14.1hh
