I posted a couple of weeks back that my baby ned was causing me to lose my nerve, well I'm very proud of myself as yesterday having lunged him first I got on him and rode him in the school initially I thought I'd stick to walk but before I knew it I was trotting. He stopped once and began to go backwards so I tried a new approach, as opposed to putting my leg on I thought I'd try nothing and it worked. He clearly wanted me to put up a fight but when I remained silent, took my leg off and sat quietly he gave up!! He seems to react much better to me being non confrontational and keeping my gob shut where as before I'd have spoken to him.
Today I went for a lovely hack and although he was on his toes I have to say he was a good chap and actually reacted better to spooky things than his two older escorts! - There is hope, hoorah!!
I know this is a bit self indulgent but I really feel positive.
I can't take all the honours though as I've put him on So Calm Plus and it certainly works!

WELL DONE you

My boy used to do the backwards thing not long after he was broken, got to the point were the more leg you put on the faster he went backwards until you would get a tiny half rear,or run into the fence, lol???Sorry havnt seen your previous post!I didnt know how to deal with it until someone told me(got her on him to show me too, lol) "when he stops or you feel him going to stop turn his head straight away to the left or right(very much left or right),then riding off in the opposite direction,do it every time",he got the message after the 6th time,it worked by throwing him off balance and then taking his mind off what he was about to do,obviously this will work with a young horse as they still trying to balance themselves with you on top, this confused him because it wasnt going his way so going backwards wasnt given as an option!
Well done on your hack by the way,i felt the same the 1st time i took my boy out 9yrs ago,it gets better and better!!!ENJOY!!
