I thought you might like to see my new guard dog. I'm a pensioner farmer living alone and used to get unwanted visitors; none since I got Foxy, my GSD, and I think the word has got around that I breed and train for the police (I don't, but don't tell anyone)! But she is now six and I have been looking for an understudy of similar breeding.

So here he is, delivery January 2014, and I can't wait! He is almost pure Czech communist border guard working stock from proven parents. It took me an age of searching to find exactly what I wanted but finally got there! He was the only one in the litter of the colour I wanted too. I think he looks quite butch with a frown to instil respect, even at this age (about 3 weeks)!

Now I have to think up a suitable name….

OOOOOHHHHHHHH

I looked at the Czech ones when I was looking for a pup a couple of years ago. They are so striking! But as we only wanted a pet, I decided not to as I thought they'd have a strong drive and work ethic (and they were very expensive!). He is stunning, going to be a beautiful big boy.

What sort of names do you like? People names like Mariusz or Otto or descriptive names like colours, temperament (blackie, runner etc)?

I called my big lad Fenris (like the Norse wolf god, son of Loki). We always get comments on it. He's Fen for short. I like deity names myself. Lots of choice from the Czech part of the world if that's what you wanted to look at.

Give him a cuddle from me! I have the same reaction to puppies as 'normal' people do to babies.

Edited to say LOOK AT HIS EARS!!! Gawd!! <squeeeeeze>

God I wouldn't let him into my house - he'd beat my (full grown) collie into submission in a second! He's adorable :) what's Foxy going to think of him though?!

Very nice, where did you end up going in the end? Pm if you prefer :)

Those lines are getting rarer, most of the Czech and Slovak dogs at the worlds this year had all the usual German, Dutch and Belgian dogs behind them.

Alec, I can't pick pups either! Foxy was literally picked at random by the breeder. Told him basically what I wanted and he picked one up and said, "Will this one do?" She has! She is now six.

Again, I told the breeder what I wanted and there is only one male dark sable, the rest are black, so it was a no brainer. Anything black up here that isn't a collie has to be a Labrador, so, as I've said, I had no choice really.:D

The breeder of the pup is in the north of England and it's his first litter. He has both parents and the breeding is mostly Czech with some DDR. No recent schutzhund qualifications but some police. I must confess I go a lot on gut instinct. No, they are not bred to be family pets.

Here's dad.

Lovely! If I had a guard dog if probably call it Fluffy or Julian or something :D

:D:D:D

Yes, that's the problem! Dogs seem to "earn" names here. I've had a Fats, and a Tubs, and a few others that I daren't mention!

Hmm...would you call a male Fluffy?? But he's short haired so that won't do.

I'll have to think it out again.

Uuum.. Not sure about him being cute. Looks like he's starting as he means to go on and already has a 'don't you mess with me' expression

:)

He looks ready to gum people to death on sight already ;)

Namewise - I think he could carry off something really butch. Like Quentin. I can hear it now...

DR - 'Quentin - SEE 'EM OFF'

'Burglars 'Hurr hurr hurr, Quentin... [thunder of paws]... oh SH-!'

:D

'Brian' would be too stealth like the burglars would not hear him coming, if they had dared cross the boundary into his territory it would be too late-they would just feel his teeth sink into their butt

Presumably he'll come to you already named. The problem all so often is that such dogs are given the daftest of grand names. That said, not really too sure about Brian! I prefer single syllable names, but then that's mostly because I've had gundogs.

I think that he should carry a suitable Scottish influenced name; Jock, something like that. Perhaps William, with him being Willy for short.

The bitch has a curious tip to her tongue, it seems to be split and I wonder if it's heritable. The sire is very smart, and like you, I would pick sable over black everyday!

Alec.

Altho my bitches have 2 syllable names I like short sharp names too . Some male names I like are Kai, Ike, Lex although I did know a Geoff who was a cracking dog! :)

Here is Max who arrived on Tuesday, kept me awake all night, ate the ethernet cable to the computer, and has 6 year old working GSD Foxy under his complete control already (well almost!).

He fears nothing and last night was warning off the lions lurking in the shadows of the bush outside the back door with barks, growls, and raised hackles!

He's adorable!

I've got photos of my two in tangles like this - you can watch the little one grow up through the pictorial references to wrestling - big lad always has his gob open and teeth on show too!
