New hat needed!

Hello!

So yesterday I had a "You've been framed" style fall yesterday involving a rabbit, a spooked horse, a gate post, the latch of the gate and my boot; resulting in me hanging upside down my by boot, and smashing my head into a gate post. After a day of vegetating on my sofa I was dragged to A&E by my parents, to discover I'm concussed.

I've thrown my hat out this morning as it was rattling! Can anyone recommend any good hats on the market at the moment, as mine was a good 4 years old.

I've always eyed this one up as it's tested with a secondary impact eg you hit your head on the fence and then horse kicks you in the head. It's the only hat in the UK that is tested for that. I think it might be the one that Oliver Townend was wearing when his horse sat on his head. http://www.rideaway.co.uk/gatehouse-hs1-jockey-skull

I have the Charles Owen young rider skull cap, but the best thing is to go out and try some on- different head shapes and all that!
 
One that fits you and conforms with BS EN 1384, PAS015 and is kitemarked would be best. You'll need to go and try some on.

btw if you were hanging upside down by your boot from the stirrup may I recommend that you extend your shopping trip to include some correctly sized safety stirrups?

excuse me while I have a mini rant regarding the price of riding hats.:rolleyes:

There's loads on the market from about £35 to £800.:confused: If H&H really wanted to do something useful it could do testing on the hats, "Which", style, or at least explain the difference between the safety standards.
No wonder horsey people get ripped off with extortionate prices if people are prepared to pay an extra £500 for some stripes and stick on crystals.

do you know what style of hat you want?

a) traditional black velvet
b) skull cap and silk
c) Inbetweeny - trad shape moulded in plastic with different materials/textures/colours
d) cycle style/lattice lightweight

I am going to look at all the hats available at Windsor at the beginning of May because I have noticed that some online shops won't take returns of hats.:(

There was a report out that seems to have disappeared recently showing that some of the cheapest hats on the market offered no less protection than the far more expensive ones!
 
My head only fits Charles own no matter how much I want a champion or Dublin onyx....my local tack shop refused to sell me a hat that doesn't fit my head so looks like I'm sticking with my Charles own skull......oh well safety over looking good.
 
As long as new hat is current standard you need to try them on. I had a son who had a nice Charles Owen and I tried it and it was horrid too short for my funny head.I was willing to pay a nice sum and ended up with quite a basic comfy Harry Hall with air vents galore(but lots of them have these too)!

Go to a reputable shop and try on, thats the only way.
