New Hay

As soon as its baled!!

The hay for this winter was delivered a 2 weeks ago - was cut on the Monday, baled on Wed and delivered on Thurs!! - a bale fell apart during stacking so my lucky coblet got to be official taster - it hardly touched the sides!!!

New hay can be indigestible--so just be carefull, introduce slowly mixed with old seasons and dont feed if stack feels warm. You could get colics.

We always leave 4 weeks minimum after baling our hay. it give the hay chance to heat up and cool down. I'd never risk feeding fresh cut hay, the risk of colic to my horses is too big a risk in my opinion.

Thanks Guys!
Someone at my yard suggested 6months!!! I thought more like 6 weeks, but have been feeding my horse one that came apart, and she's been fine. Last years hay, is really not an option at the mo, so I've been feeding haylage. Very expensive!!

Mine was baled 4 weeks ago got told to leave for 6 weeks...horses seem to sniff up when walking past the barn...it smells GORGEOUS!!!!

normally a month or two but dependent on how early it is baled and when we run out of last years, ie if baled late like last couple of years we are prob already running out! Like to leave it as long as poss. This year was baled 3rd week of June and will be starting to use it for trailer trips in about a months time but won't be feeding it properly till they come in october time.
