New home needed for male GSD

I'm asking on behalf of a friend, she has a 5 year old GSD that needs rehoming. He is well trained, good with children ( lives with 5) and other dogs.
Has been know to chase cats, currently lives outside.

He is very strong on a lead, I would say that is his only negative. He really needs an outdoor home with other dogs, would make a good deterrent on a yard, smallholding.
I look after him when they are away and he has always been very well behaved with me, my dog and my young children. He has been around me horses, he is good with them but a bit over curious as owners aren't horsey.
He must go to a good home that will be vetted by owners, currently in Cambridge. Please PM me for photos.
 
If he didn't have the cat issue I'd have him like a shot - and I'm relatively local. Sadly chasing cats is a big nono here.
 
Why is she rehoming him? Please tell his owners to be very careful where they place him, a big bold male GSD could quite easily fall into the wrong hands. If he is still entire I would recommend she have him castrated before rehoming him. It might be worth her having a look/posting on the Big GSD Forum http://www.biggsd.com/, they have links with lots of GSD rescues.
 
The military and police usually have their own breeding programmes these days and are looking for certain genetic strengths that most pet-bred GSDs wouldn't have.

Agree with Biggsd and with having him neutered before he leaves if he hasn't been done already.
Also if they are in touch with his breeders they should help, I regularly see breeders taking back older dogs on FB if things haven't worked out with their home, any good breeder should offer this back-up no matter how old the dog is.
 
Thumbs up for German Shepherd Rescue.. I have had contact with them in rehoming GSDs ( through work ) and they get the dogs great homes with matched owners.
 
I would suspect 99.9% of dogs will chase cats - cats run, dogs chase! However, once a dog knows the cat and vice versa I have found there isn't usually a problem. My dog wanted to chase our stable cat, my sister's dog (a rottie x GSD) wanted to do exactly the same. However, once the cat sussed them both out, he rules the stable yard essentially and, although they will occasionally chase (in play), he knows how to get away and he also knows a quick slap on their faces usually stops them! :D

Jemima askin - a bit of training and 'cat desensitisation' works pretty well. If you are talking yard cats, once they are used to each other they are normally ok. Our old dog was a real cat-hate type (if she got the chance I think she's have happily killed cats!) but when we got ours at the stables she learnt they were part of her "family" and she was absolutely fine and 100% trustworthy with them.
 
To be fair to him, when he's at mine he doesn't bother my cat, he has chased a cat when out with his owner.
I've never had an issue with him not coming to call, with other dogs horses etc.
 
GSD rescue were fantastic when we got our two. They're both lovely dogs, yes they do chase the cat but they've been trying to catch her for two years and failed miserably, also the rats that saunter through the yard. As well as the local rabbit population. Strangers that drive into the yard they invite in for tea!!!!!!!!! love them to bits (the GSDs that is)
