Hello fellow forum fillies,

This is the first time I have posted in a H&H forum and I am after a bit of advice!

I am planning on making the big step in a horse rider's career and buying my first proper horse (ponies from parents not included!) and there's been one little question I wanted advice on and who better to ask?!!

What do you do with your new found best friend when you actually get him home?? ride it? leave it in for a day? turn it out? or just admire it/groom it/tell everybody?

Many thanks!

If its a ridden animal used to going out competing etc, then I'd ride it within a short time of coming off transport. Then either turn it out for a while on its own or stable it (depending on what its been used to).
Also would keep nosey mates out of my hair for a few days at least, so can start to find out more about horse etc & how it reacts to new home :)

I have always had the types you get on and ride. I prefer it that way, I don't personally find much use in the terrified, nervous types that you need to settle in.

Thank you guys. I guess it also depends on what time he/she arrives and whether tack is included. Would be nice to have a quick ride on the day of arrival.

And I wont be getting a flighty type either! Give me a gypsy cob any day of the week!

I think it would also depend on how far/ long the horse has had to travel. With both of mine, I have given them a couple of days to settle in before riding but both had an overnight ferry journey to get to me.
