New horse alert! And a q? Greys?

Hello guys, I picked up my new box last Saturday, he's turning out to be just what the doctor ordered, after losing my confidence on my boy of 3.5 years, who I still have. So my question to you is, my new boy is grey! I co hoping to do some showing, dressage in the future, how on earth do I keep him clean the night before a comp? He loves to roll, and also lays his head in poo, every night? Do I get one of those rugs that covers them from head to toe, for the night before a show, what do you all do?

Congrats on new pony. I have a coloured with a lot of white on him who is a mud monster and likes his poo pillows as well. If I don't have time in te morning, I bath him the day before and put a snuggy hood at night, the one with neck and face. Don't do it often and he's a sensible boy so never had any problems. Looks like horsey batman !

All I can say is be prepared to work harder before shows than any of your bay/chestnut owning friends!!
We show jump rather than show but still like him to look spotless when we are out. For us it means a full clean the night before, snuggy hood, rug and bandages over night. Then expect to be up very early the next day to repair the damage with a bucket of warm water!!
Our boy has even been known to get poo inside his snuggy hood!
We are finding pigs oil has been a big help this year but he still manages to get filthy and loves to roll too. We find it easier in the summer though as he stays cleaner in the field overnight, if it's dry, than he does in his stable
The good news is that the hard work is always worth it as there is nothing like a clean grey to stand out from the crowd (I might just be a bit biased!)

We have a grey, we show jump rather than show but like an earlier poster we still like him to be immaculate in the ring. We will wash him the night before, plait his tail to try & keep it clean & then rug him. The following morning he'll still end up with a green face, probably both sides & possibly some stains on his legs but his body should be clean. We still have to do some cleaning on the morning of the show though............Welcome to owning a grey! :)
 
For one thing, forget stable rugs and use outdoor rugs indoors. They are all breathable nowadays and have the advantage of not letting the wee and poo stains through. Oh and you only need to get them cleaned once a year a the most.
 
I have to show my grey from the field which was fun with all the mud last year! We do a wash the night before a show and apply lots of show sheen, then a rug. I don't like he Lycra hoods as he had managed to completely cover his eyes with it one time which could be dangerous in the field so I leave an extra 45mins for morning tidy ups. If you have used the show sheen then the dirt comes off easily in the morning and I towel dry those areas.

Snuggy turnout Hoods, shampoo, hot towel washes, tail bags (on all through winter!), magic cowboy greets spot remover, lots of towels, waterproof gloves, leg wraps, chalk - an extra hour in the mornings, lots of clean fillet string. Greys are a nightmare!
 
I actually find mine is more messy in the stable (big green poo stains up under his rug from his belly to middle of his side) than when he's out in the field (just a bit of dust to brush off). So I tend to leave out overnight before shows.
 
If the field is dry in summer, I used to leave mine out, dry mud doesn't leave stains like poo! Bath the night before, & coat shine or furniture polish help to stop stains sticking as easily. If the horse is already bathed & clean, even if you do keep in, its easy enough to sponge off stains when you've brushed as much off as possible. Mine always gets rank stains on her legs too, bandages with slightly too long padding so it protects knees/hocks & coronets a bit help. And there's been a few occasions in winter when her legs are super fluffy & I knew they wouldn't dry in time I've used a hair dryer.
