New Horse and our time at the Racehorse Charities

That was nothing to do with the lady who runs it though, the yard manager? She was lovely!
I thought Moorcroft was a great place, didn't want to leave! :)

I've considered re-homing from one of these charities before now but I've been put after reading their screening process cos I'm not sure I'm a good enough. Even if they liked me on paper, I could see myself turing up and making an idiot of my self.

It's lovely to hear your experiences though and what a fabulous outcome!

Thanks so much for a great post Firewell - Good luck to your mum and the lovely Charlie! You were one of the first posters on my thread about racehorse rehoming and you were just starting to look then so glad you have been so successful, would you be prepared to share the costs involved with your rehoming or the costs for Moorcroft and HEROS as i have been told it will be about £1500 from other people which sounds an awful lot for a loan horse.

Hi thanks :).
Yes it is around £1,500 although some of them are sale ones for that money too (at Heros anyway, just loans at Moorcroft).
It is a lot of money for a loan but you can keep the horse forever if you like and if it gets something awful like kissing spines or whatever and can't be ridden again the charity will take it back and rehome as a companion, which is quite handy as normally if it was totally your own you would have to retire it and pay for a field ornament or PTS.
So in a way it being on loan takes out the risk.
Also these horses are lovely! We were told that Charlie would be 7/8k at a dealers down to his confo, paces and temprement so it's not a lot to have a lovely horse. A lot of effort has gone into reschooling them as well, you don't have to worry about teaching them to canter on the right lead or anything and you know you are getting something sane and healthy not a broken nutter ;).
Of course it would never work if you were looking to resell or make a profit. It is for charity too and that money goes towards helping other horses to have a nice life :).
It's not a lot of money when you think of it like that, it's a small price to pay for a nice horse :).

Also (forgot to say!) it stops people just looking for a free horse who will turn around and hand it back after a few months. They want the people to be serious and have the horse as their own and give it a long term home and I think the financial investment helps to find people who are serious about it.
