A girl down my yard had her new horse delivered Saturday. Since arriving it seems pretty quiet in itself but seems to have a terrible habit! He grinds his teeth on everything, dragging his teeth a long wood, metal, you name it! He also eats wood, bites and scrapes metal, literally anything in is reach is getting chewed or eaten and destroyed! Dentist came and did his teeth and said there were no problems. Yard manager is not happy at all! Any suggestions on how to prevent this?! Previous owner said he had no vices and does not crib...

I hope it is just that he's unsettled. He has plenty of hay, a lick and a treat ball whilst stabled and is out during the day from 9-5.

The yard owner sound nasty. That poor horse is quite unhappy and all she can do is moan?

hwta i have found in the past with horses and ponies i deal with, its a lack of minerales and iorn in the body, what makes them chew wood lick the wall etc, could also mean the horse is anemic, i use a supplement call propell plus, hope this helps

Sounds just like my loan horse! She did it on everything for months, pretty much chewed through all our fencing (owner said she'd never done it) - but now she's settled she only does it when it's breakfast time or time to come in, so hopefully he's just unsettled and will stop in time.

I would be very careful with using Propell Plus - its a brilliant supplement but sends a lot of horses nuts!. I used it for my mare when I first got her as she was run down and it always worked for her but since then, everything else I have put on it has gone massively over the top.

Agree you should recommend getting bloods done. Up the forage - more small haylage nets to slow the horse down. Remove anything near the stable that can be chewed for the short term. How much turn out is the horse getting? and was the feed kept the same when he arrived? there are a lot of extra factors which can seriously stress a new horse so I personally prefer to try to keep the horse pretty much as it was before - and of course, you should never change a horses feed over night anyway. Spray washing up liquid on exposed surfaces as well for a quick fix but hopefully the new boy will start to settle down shortly.

YO nasty? The OP says quite unhappy & doesn't mention moaning

I'd be pretty fed up/unhappy if a livery came in without vices & then trashed all it could within reach in days :(

Hope the new owner has contacted old owner to ask them to recall if horse did the same when they 1st got it?
Is there any chance of slinging horse out 24/7 - does it do it to anything when out in field?
