New horse - checklist of what I need to buy...

Look on facebook for Tack and Turnout, Smalldale, Bradwell but they have a small shop at Ladybooth equestrian. They sell second hand so can get everything you need.

I've bought loads from them and saved a shocking amount of money on very good quality stock.

Eg. Bent leg Safety stirrup irons and leathers for £12. 62" leather girth for £12, 60" leather girth £15 (this one is £60 new). You call or msg saying what you need and they rummage around and call you back with what they've got and pictures.

For rugs, figure out if you need them. Mine doesn't because he isn't clipped, stays in overnight in a stone stable and isn't out for more than 6 hours in rain. He wont be rugged unless the temperature goes below minus 5. If you do need rugs, I really love Ruggles for price, quality and fit.

Contact details for all relevant professionals (vet, farrier, hay supplier, feed supplier, bedding supplier, dentist, saddle fitter, transporters, instructor, etc.). Third Party insurance. Savings or veterinary insurance. Emergency fund to cover emergencies, including the worst case scenario. Written notice of your wishes for how the yard and/or vet should proceed in your absence should the horse be injured or sick, including contact details for whoever would be needed for euthanasia and disposal. A back up livery option should the current one cease to suit for whatever reason.

Don't go mad with buying as you can always get things quickly if you need them. I would only add a salt lick for now. You will probably want to buy 2 of each turnout rug so that you always have a dry one to put on, but it depends on the drying facilities at the yard, and also best to buy 1 of each for now to see how you like them. Enjoy your new horse!

All of what everyone has said ... if you can push to Rambo/rhino rugsnow you will probably save money in the long run.

You have definitely missed matching saddlecloths, bandages and fly veils in at least 27 different colours , of your list, as these are the only true necessity for any horse owner - (specially if it’s a micro mini that you can’t ride) just saying 😀

Good luck with new ponio - very exciting times ahead!

I cannot even imagine what it would be like to actually start with no horsey gear! I seem to have been born with most of mine :)

I had to when I got a horse after a long break.

It was Sept so rugs were less of an issue but I was very restrained.

a headcollar
grooming kit
lightweight turnout
fleece
bucket, feedbowls, haynets
a bridle, bit and martingale, saddlepad and I arranged a saddle fitter for the afternoon of the day he arrived.

12 years later and I've added another horse and don't actually know how many rugs I have.
