Bought a new pony, old owner was super honest and did tell me he cribs but it sounded like it wasn't too bad. He's stressed as he's settling in so cribbing quite a bit, wondering how I can best support and help him if anyone has tips? He's 3, developed it as a habit due to being stabled 24/7 as a yearling. He is out 24/7 now, slowly introducing my colt to him but they should be fully together in the next few days. He has hay available 24/7 and good grass. Just wondering if there's more I can do for him while he adjusts.

Is he cribbing on your post and rail fence? If so I would put some electric tape round to protect fencing then provide him with a dedicated cribbing post. Once integrated with your colt the cribbing may calm down but unfortunately the best thing to do is let him do it.

Yeah, I didn't think he'd be able to reach as it only has a wooden rail along the top & wire below that - I have some spare posts so will give that a try. Thank you!

Was he treated for ulcers before? Because I would be very suspicious of him having them and would want him scoped at least
Yes very often the two are linked, particularly if he’s been stabled 24/7 he may well have ulcers from the stress. Definitely worth checking

Poor fellow. Nothing to add. I agree with what others have said.

Did they explain why he was in 24/7? Was he sick? Did they own him then?

I've got one that cribs. I've had him since 5 and he's now 19. He's an ex racer and came with the habit. I've tried putting cribox everywhere but you can't do a whole field fence very effectively. He was at one livery yard where they insisted he wore a collar. That didnt work and we left soon after. Another livery yard just accepted it and put door mat across the top of his stable door to protect the wood. We now have our own place and I just let him do it. He has various different posts in different fields that he uses. It does rather trash the ground in winter when he just wants to stand in one spot. I've tried all the different supplements and tips. The latest one which i saw on FB was to hang a teddy up in his stable. He's out 24/7, just comes in for farrier and extreme weather. Anyway at the moment the teddy seems to be working but god knows why. Not sure I can hang teddies all around the field though!!!
I think you are just going to have to let him get on with it. I find my boy does it more in winter when there's less grass to entertain him.

It was the home before the people I got him from. There was no reason to keep him in at all, they said she didn't know what she was doing or didn't care, so they bought him to get him out of there. I've seen a video from an old ad she posted where she made him jump a metre and had full body clipped him 😢

Thank you I don't really want to try prevent him doing it necessarily so I'm going to try putting up dedicated cribbing posts. He loves salt licks so I may just put them around the entire fence line lol. I have endless toys out there for my colt but new boy doesn't seem too interested. Think I'll try hanging the teddies though!
