Just read through this and seen that you've now found another yard. My youngster climbed over the door once when I took the other horse away - she'd never done it before and I went and bought an anti-weave grill with infill for her. Also EVERY time she has to be in on her own such as when I take the TB out for exercise, the youngster gets a treat ball which she loves so she associates her friend going out with her treats. Now she is so unstressed she is normally laid down when I get back from exercising the other one! Hope the new yard works out for you.
The new yard sounds great and the barn setup sounds ideal, will be interested to know if this solves the problem! Happily having two horses means you have some control over whether he has company
Sounds like another Ned. While Ned had got better in the stable, I took him to a new home (which was stables at night) and he also jumped out of the stable. I bought a weave grill, but I was terrified of him doing similar to yours.
After he jumped out of the field, I simply had to take him back to his original home, which is 24hr turnout. I'm now VERY limited in where I can take Ned and any yard I visit is inspected thoroughly for gaps in the hedge etc. It's a tricky one
I have the same issue with my pony he is not caustraphobic and is quite happy to come into his stable to lie down and snooze or eat, it is just when he decides he has had enough he will climb out. It does not make any difference if there are horses in or not, it is just when he decides he would like to go out again. He is normally ok in the winter being in when there is less to eat and the weather is not so nice!!!
Unfortunately he had a serious injury that required a long period of box rest but climbed out the first morning even though he had a soft cast on. In the end I moved him temporarily to a specialist yard for his box rest and he had a full grill up and settled down and was fine. He always had company when on his box rest and ad lib hay.
I think he will always be an outdoor pony as that is what he prefers so he lives out all year but I think he would cope with living in during the winter.
