Oooops! Not a good start. I know I should have stuck to the school (lot softer landing) but I thought I would take him out for a gentle hack along the bridle path. My friend came out on her bike with me and the yard dogs both came too. It was a lovely morning and I was enjoying my little self until Edward decided that it was time for a canter. I thought he was bolting so applied the brakes and he stopped dead. Unfortunately I carried on and hit the deck with a thud. My neck and ribs are a bit sore and I am sure I will feel worse tomorrow. Going to stick to school for a bit until we get to know each other better!

I would however go in the school - safe environment for you and him

I think that one of the last times I rode Amy I hada fall like that.

We were cantering quite happily along - then prop, prop, prop - STOP!

She was most ammused to see my lying on my back staring up at her. Didn't let go though!

Eeeeek.

Emergency brakes are in good working order it would seem. Hope you're not too sore and it hasn't dented your confidence. I wouldn't say it was "wrong" to take a new horse out on the road though. When I had Patches she was a nightmare to school, nappy and threatening to rear. I took her out hacking instead, no pressure, to bond with her for a few weeks.

It's all hit and miss and we have to find what works for us and our new horses. Sadly, for you, it wasn't a painless lesson.

Thanks Patches. I spoke to his previous owner last night and she said that she thought he would be fine on a little hack this morning. It has dented my confidence a bit to be honest. I tried to remount but he is quite big and he wouldn't stand still (why do I always end up with horses who won't stand still?) so I ended up leading him home and lungeing him for 20 mins. I know he hasn't been lunged for ages and he pretended that he didn't know how to do it - lol. He did eventually "remember" and he responded well to my voice commands which I was pleased about.

I would do that AmyMay but there's no-one to go with unfortunately. The yard is tiny and the only other horse who gets hacked out is being sold tomorrow. The other horses are either brood mares, retired or hunters. YO is waiting for farrier to come to her horse and she will hack out with me next week.

hi i know exactly how you feel i brought a new horse i have had him a month and though we would go for our hack out as we had done previously with a friend he tripped up on road and i went straight over his head landed on road on my face i have a few nasty head injuries but on the mend know. With both of these cases it was not that the horse was being nasty!!I felt a bit like you with confidence but im determined when better to get back on and do some more schooling work soon!hope u regain confidence take care xxxx

so he didn't dump you - you lost your balance? sorry, couldn't resist....

Atleast he wasn't being nasty....maybe in the school tomorrow?

Hope you're not too sore hun x

yeah im getting better now just waiting to get feeling back in my face!!!Will be back in the saddle soon!!!Hope you are too take care let me know how you get on?

Thanks ParkRanger. I am not really sure what happened exactly as it all went so fast lol! My friend thinks that he just slammed his brakes on so I am sticking to that explanation for now!

Bugger! No it's not funny - happened to me once jumping and I snapped the whole bridle and had it hanging in my hand.....atleast he stops though eh? Even if it is ultra quickly...

oh no what a nightmare and you were so excited too! this doesnt bode well for me tonight, my new mate came on fri and i took him out for a hack on weds and all good, except he isnt sure of cows or bridges with running water which might be a problem being as im in the middle of the country (spoilt rotten) but he is great with traffic, having come from a yard next to the m25, but i am taking him out with a friend and her horse (my old share mare) and have a feeling i may need my body protector, but then, do cobs ever get fast enough to dump us????? enjoy and try try again clementine. im scared about how many facial injuries there seem to be on h&h this week or is that the same person? must check to alleviate fears!!

I'd pop a few ibubrofen to minimise the pain and swelling. Think back to how much you were enjoying yourself until the hiccup. Pick a quiet time tomorrow, tack up + lunge him in the school for 10 minutes or so - pop on and walk round for another 10 minutes or so just to get a bit of communication going between the pair of you and then if you feel happy have a little stroll out for another 10 minutes or so with a friend walking or cycling alongside for moral support.

TChamp, I am sure you will be fine. Your boy sounds great. I am sure Edward will be too once we have got to know each other a little better. It' probably best not to read too much about everyone's injuries methinks!

I have a new horse and it's taking us a long time to get to know each other. It's also a long time since I last had a new horse so can't really remember how long it took for things to start clicking - but then each horse is different. Mine had never hacked before but I feel I'm building a better relationship with him out hacking at the moment than I am in the arena. Again though, each horse is different. My plan is to to do 2-3 15-20minute sessions in the arena each week and hack the rest of the time - mine is a very green and immature 5 yr old though.

I am glad that you are getting on slowly but surely with your horse. He is very young still so it will defnitely take you time to get to know each other. My other horse is a youngster and very immature for his age too so I know what it is like. We had started to make some real progress but then he jumped out of his field and hurt himself and he's now on box rest, poor boy.

The new boy was meant to be a steady kind of chap suitable for OH to learn to ride on so I am hoping that he will settle down and we can all have some fun. It is early days for him yet.

LOL!

He is doing great, he is trotting and cantering without stirrups now, and loves his gallops over the fields, bit of a speed demon he is! Beau loves it though, he has always been a dressage horse so he likes to kick his heels up and have a good blast!

He is a better rider than me now I think, braver anyway!
