My horse Beauty has developed like 5 pence piece size cuts on her hind lower leg. She had two and then last night I found another but this time on the outside of the same leg. I called the vet and she said to cold hose the area, clean with hibiscrub and then layer with Sudocrem. Do you think these are bites that she's rubbed and made bleed then rubbed the scab off? I only bought her 2 weeks ago and she didn't have those then.

Any help with causes or prevention would be great.

Thank you :)

Not that I know of. There is a dog I see but it is always across the field with its owner. Was you thinking dog bites??

Where abouts on the hind leg are they? i.e are they in her heels, or on the inside of her leg? does she have lots of feathers/hairy legs!?!

In any case I'd follow your vets advice and see how they go......

My horse had some thing similar last year on his legs, it wasn't mud fever- but the arena surface granules were irritating his skin on his pasterns and heels, and i had also put an odd bale of shavings and chopped straw in his bed which he normally isn't on and that aggravated his skin too- he was given a bottle of skin lotion with anti inflammatories in to get the swelling down and clear the sores up! - Hibiscrub/washing can also sometimes prevent healing.

Good luck with your new horse!

Yes, my own horse and some others were attacked on several occasions at a livery yard by what we think was a dog. Though others swore they had seen a black panther in the area. One horse was so frightened he jumped three sets of post and rail to get back to the yard. However, the attacks only lasted over a few nights and then nothing else was reported. The vet said they were dog bites.

Is she shod? And is she living out?

Both my horse and her fieldmate have been coming in with small scrapes on their legs for the past month or so. Our best guess is that they are catching themselves as they lie down/get up either on shoes/nails or on the ground (they seem correllated with lack of rain/ harder ground). If this is the case then there's probably not much that can be done to prevent it, so I've just been checking legs everyday and hibiscrubbing/ applying cream as required. They've been healing pretty quickly, and as long as there's no heat/ swelling I'm not too concerned!

Hey,

There is one on her Fetlock (inside) one on her cannon (inside) and the new one is between her hock and her gaskin. She does have feathers and quite hairy legs. She lives out in a paddock with absoultely nothing to rub on (except herself - using her other leg to scratch it etc)

Thank you for you comment - I will make sure the hibiscrub is doing its job!! :)

I suppose this could be a possibility as I have no idea what coud have caused such a cut in unber 10 hours....I will have to keep an eye out. If anymore have appeared tonight then I will ask if anyone brings up their dog during the day. A panther!! Jesus, hope there isn't one of those lerking around!! Will keep an eye on it...hopefully will just dissapear!x

No she isn't shod only trimmed. Yes living out.

There is a little swelling on her fetlock but this seems to have gone down this morning. The vet said if there was no improvement within 24 hours to call her out to check there is no infection xx

Hey just out of interest, what colour is your horse?? , my old coloured cob gets very similiar things on his legs and has done for about 2-3 years now. tried everything from hibbiscrubbing everyday and cream to Mud guard ointments and in the end was told could possibly be a combination of greesy heel and sweaty legs. ( Just thinking with saying has feathers) May possibly be something similiar.. vet recomended shave my boys legs off couple of times a year to let his legs breathe... and seems to have worked a treat..

xxxxx

I will follow this thread with interest, as my horse has the same thing at the mo. Not sure what it is as I cannot find any possible cause.
It is really annoying as I cant seem to find any trigger and it has been going on for just over a week and still getting new ones (although seems to be slowing down a bit now). Mine seem to be like grazes that are the same size as your ones but only on his legs???

Hello!!

She is Black - may be a way forward then for me too if I was to get her legs shaved. If they have not gone/at least cleared a little by Sat I will get the vet out and see what she suggests. Hope it will be as easy as getting her legs shaved!! Thank you xx

Maybe, as quite a few people have reported this as being an issue it could be to do with the warmer weather and her legs sweating? Mine look exactly like grazes on her back legs...weird. I have just remembered that last night I saw her crossing her back legs and tring to scract the sores.....hmmm! Will keep u posted!!x

If she has a lot a feather it sounds like she could have harvest mites. Feathered horses can suffer quite badly with this as they like to live in the warmth of the feather and burrow into the skin and cause sores. My mare suffers from this and she has to have her legs permanently shaved. Try cleaning them with hibbi scrub and then using a frontline spray (or ask your vet for treatment of mites). Scratching and stamping of the legs is a big indicator of feather mites!

It may not be what is wrong with yours but at least it would be one more thing ruled out!! The vet said to me was a bit like us being very warm and rubbing. Apparently some horses with feathers will do the same and rub in the same spot causing small cuts and scabs!! I spent years and years thinking and treating it like was mud fever, was only really when i got the mud chaps for winter i realised it couldnt have been this as his legs actually got worse.. and this was from him sweating in them...

Hope you find the solution tho... is hard seeing them with cuts and thinsgw ithout knowing how theyve got them :) xxxxxx

Did the vet not give an indication as to what she thought was the problem?

Sounds like a form of dermatitis to me, if in doubt, call the vet back

To be honest know you've mentioned faether mits I think this could be it....She stomps the leg thats affected (I just thought it was to scare those pesty flies) I will have her legs shaved for sure and at least that way if it goes I know its that and if not as wildcard said thats one thing ruled out. Can you still ride them with sores on the legs?

Simply shaving the legs will not get rid of the mites, you will have to treat for that too. Ask your vet, no one on here has seen your horses legs and therefore can not give any firm diagnosis.

I'd see how it goes and if it doesn't get better then see what vet says- could maybe be anything from Greasy Heel, Dermatitis (which is what my horse had), feather mites, but your vet will know, depending on what it is the treatment for it may be different.

Hope she gets better soon.

The vet will be called out if not cleared by Sat definitely or as soon as another cut appears (if it does). She puts all her weight on her leg and doesn't flinch when I touch the sores to put cream on. Will monitor closely and if no improvement vet will be called. The vet said it looks like a bite (hornet or something similar) that she has scratched and made bleed and it has scabbed and she's pulled the scab off.

As long as the sores aren't weaping/not sore you can ride with them. I ride mine when she has them as they are only like a small cut (I swear i'm not cruel they cause her no pain!) a vet will need to diagnose. Mine was treated with frontline and also with this injection that I can't remember the name of! But i'm sure the vet can give you the best answer.

No not weeping at all. Doesn't even seem sore to her, just itchy. Fingers crossed it clears up soon! Thank u ppl for ur responses!xx
